Distributor Ignition trade-off

The three waveforms on the previous pages represent three methods of operation using a distributor. These tradeoffs are for distributors with Hall sensor or Optical sensor. This does not apply to a crank trigger wheel or a VR sensor.

 
Installation
Timing accuracy

Next Cylinder mode,
Trigger Return

  • Requires fixed shaft of distributor.
  • Required sensor location may be the same as existing timing
  • Excellent cranking/starting
  • Good running

This Cylinder mode,
Time Based cranking

  • Requires fixed shaft of distributor
  • Sensor must be at 50º to 90º BTDC
  • Possible modification of advance plate required to set Trigger angle
  • Very Good cranking/starting
  • Very Good running

This Cylinder mode,
Trigger Return

  • Same as This Cylinder mode above plus
  • Possible modification of Trigger Wheel required
  • Excellent cranking/starting
  • Very good running
