Fixed.

Successfully flashed the serial monitor and was able to reload the firmware using the bootloader. Life returns to normal.

Jean, thankyou for your comments. I agree with you that it is a scary prospect but at the moment as I already have a non functional un it I feel that I have nothing to lose.
