MLV not running after update

Hi,

I recently got an update request for MLV. I installed it, but then i had an error that said it had a jar file problem.

I updated java and managed to run and use the program fine.

Then the next day i tried to run it again, flash screen comes up, then nothing. It won't run at all.

Tried to reinstall but the same thing happens.

Im' running an xp laptop. tunerstudio update works fine but mlv has the issue.

The update to 4.0 was much larger than usual as it included the JRE.
It sounds like at least some part of the update was interrupted and didn't make it down properly.

I would try uninstalling and delete everything in the install dir:
c:\Profram Files\EFIAnalytics\MegaLogViewer\

Then run the installer for the current version from:
http://www.tunerstudio.com/index.php/downloads

Once you have a version with the JRE, future updates will be normal smaller updates .

I did all that.

Still no joy.

Just cant understand why it was working fine, then stopped, with no reason

But something here wasn't done.

Part of your initial outline isn't making complete sense.
You said that it wasn't working after the update, then you updated the PC's Java and it started working.
However, the current MLV shouldn't need any Java installed if all is there properly.

You should no longer need any Java installed and it will work fine.

Do you have all service packs installed?

I had one user that was still using Windows 2000 and the bundled 1.8 JRE apparently no longer supports that. However for Windows XP we tested with the bundled JRE. It is possible that without service pack 3 the 1.8 JRE does have a problem?

Seeing that it sounds JRE related, something thing that might be good to try.
In the MegaLogViewer install dir, it you rename the runtime folder, the MLV will use the system installed JRE.

However, if you are using TunerStudio 2.6.12+, it is using the very same bundled JRE. So that would say it isn't a problem with the JRE version but perhaps the install.

What I did was update mlv first.

After update, I had a jar file error. Which pointed to a corrupt download. Searching what could have caused it revealed it could be a Java problem.

So I updated Java. Once that was done I downloaded a fresh update. It was working but I had two installs as I found out earlier.

Then I closed laptop down for the night.

The next time I tried to run the program it didn't work.

Xp is service pack 3.

Renamed the runtime folder, uninstalled and reinstalled Java. Uninstalled and reinstalled all mlv installs.

TS runs perfect, mlv doesn't load still.

I realisd there were two installs because TS was using the old version that had the jar file error. This has now been removed. But the problem still remains.

Registry has also been checked and any entries are clear.

What version Java do you have installed?
As that is what it would be using now that the runtime folder is renamed.

In the past if you get a jar file error it was 1 of 2 things:
1 - The jar is compiled for a new version of Java than you have installed.
2 - The jar file isn't fully there and corrupt.

However, with MLV 4.0+ on Windows where the JRE is bundled, number 1 should never happen. So there never shouldn't be a need to update your Java if you do it wouldn't make a difference.

Can you post / Send your MegaLogViewerAppDebug.txt file from the dir:
[YourUserHomeDir]/.efiAnalytics/

Then I can see what JRE's it was running on when it was still running.

But basically if it was running, it can't stop on it's own. Something changed.
If reinstalling it isn't fixing it, there is something being missed.

I seem to have two log files 1st has code MegaLogViewerAppDebug.txt I think thats where it started playing up

Yes, quite useful. That shows it does not appear to be a JRE problem, it is starting on the bundled JRE as it should, but there is some other type of issue occuring. I will not be able to backtrace it until tomorrow.

I believe the problem is related to the Graph Trace Color selection.

Did you by chance change Graph Trace colors?

I bet it would come back to life if you deleted the files:
[UserDir]/mlvUser.properties
[UserDir]/.efiAnalytics/mlvUser.properties
[UserDir]/.efiAnalytics/mlvUser.properties.bak

Warning though, you won't want to do that if you have Custom fields etc... It will revert back to all default settings.

It seems to be a bug. Deleting those files is just a work around until the next release.
