MSEXTRA donations

Post by jsmcortina »

Over the years we have had people ask us about this, so now I have created some Paypal accounts to receive voluntary donations.

See http://www.msextra.com/doc/donations.html

Link apears to be a bit broken, it redirects to a PP age, but no info ( e-mail or mobile phone ) info.

I would love to donate!

could you provide the info?

Thanks,

The Paypal page is just a screen capture to show how to set the donation to a gift and not a payment. The information on the different accounts is lower on the same page. Setting your donation as a gift means that there won't be any fees lost to Paypal and all the money you give will go to the developers.

So you need to go to the Paypal site, open your account and click on the "Send Money" tab and send the gift to one of the Paypal accounts (ms1extra@msextra.com, ms2extra@msextra.com or ms3@msextra.com).

I think this is great and long over due!

Can you put some donate buttons on the pages so it takes you straight into paypal instead of needing to send to an email address? Samething under the covers, but makes it much simpler and paypal will generate the donate button html for you in a snap,

As James mentioned, thank you for the donations and it is appreciated.

Having said that, I would just like to point out that those who have donated are a very small minority. If the rest of those benefiting from the firmware (any version) could just give the equivalent of one coffee (large fancy one...) the guys mentioned on the donations page could get one themselves for every day they work on the code. This is far from being the case right now. None of them do this for the money but support would be appreciated. And I'm not asking for myself but the rest of the guys.

I don't want to appear to be complaining because I'm not but just think of how much you've spent on your engine, ECU, tuning pc and software and all the rest. Then think how much value you put on each of these and on what is running your engine (the firmware). So if you think it's worth skipping one coffee (or more) and donating it then it would be very much appreciated and would show your support for all the time the guys have spent on this.

Sent some more. Much easier to send a little here and there, rather than one big amount. Hopefully everyone else is too. Thanks for the great firmware guys.

James,

There was a post in another thread (that post seems to have been removed) that said you get several hundred dollars a month from the sale of boards (from BandG?). Is that true? This donation thread makes it seem like you get nothing, so I'm confused.

If it was removed, it was probably misinformed FUD. I recall the post you refer to, it sounded like heresay. Think about it. James writes an alternative firmware for MS (at least until the MS3 came along, which was a great honor to be given the responsibility of writing the primary firmware for), why would B&G be funnelling him money? They aren't even making enough off the hardware sales to quit their day jobs (I believe Al recently retired, but that's retirement).. MS hardware prices have always been as dirt cheap as they can possibly get them.
Personally, I'd like to see the price of the MS3 include some extra amount that goes directly to Ken & James, maybe a "development surcharge" or something, like $5 or $10 extra for each MS3 CPU sold. They won't get rich off even that, but it'd probably bring in more than the donations.

Yes, that was my post. I "hear" Jame "say" he got this cut of sales (in VA?). Maybe he was BS'ing, don't know. He can clear this up. Removing post is not very convincing though. No more to say on ths.
