Button-tooltips interfering with usability,

Post by BigBlockMopar »

I've found that when working with MLV and viewing a datalog in TS, while hovering the mouse over the stop or pause-button, the appearing 'tooltip' of what the button does, is occassionaly blocking the input when I want to click and 'stop' a running datalog's playback at a certain point.
Sometimes when viewing/running a playback, I want to stop the playback right at a certain time, but MLV then doesn't respond the first time because the tooltip was in the way/under the mouse pointer.

IMO, after sometime of using MLV most people will already know what the buttons do, so there's no need to keep the buttontips to pop up at start/stop or the zoom-buttons for instance.
Maybe a preference setting where the tips can be turned on/off would be possible?

Also;
I know CTRL-S and P can be used for Start/Stopping a playback, but I don't find these keys very intuitive.
I would expect hitting the Spacebar to start and toggle stop/starting a playback, just like in most movieplayers.

I just use the arrow keys. You have to hold it down but for me it actually scrolls through faster than playback and when you let off it stops instantly allowing single presses of the arrow keys to single step forward or backward. If it is a big log I will often uses the search function to jump to what I am looking for. Another trick is if you have been manual marking your logs with the space bar then just go to the playback indicator down the bottom and just click on the mark and MLV goes to that point. Same as you would on a movie player.
Find the Manuals up top under Quick links: Manuals. :RTFM:

Just found out, the tooltips appear 'on top' of the buttons only when the window size is fullscreen.
When I make the MLV window a bit smaller, the tooltips will appear slightly lower and don't get in the way of the button itself.

This seems less of a problem in TS because there's another bar in the window under the Playback controls.

I agree the cursor-keys work nicely.
Creating Markers with the spacebar... is that a function only available in the paid-version of MLV?

At the Hot Keys keylayout under the Help-menu, I noticed the Spacebar should already be doing something (Pause), but it doesn't do anything on my version.
Perhaps a bug in de OSX/Linux-version of MLV?

As a Mac-user, using Apple's Magic Mouse with MLV, you can scroll up/down by stroking the top surface of the mouse, as if it was a mouse wheel. This is nice for scaling/zooming on the graph in or out.
But the mouse also supports left/right action, so you can also stroke left and right on the top surface, but unfortunatly this has the same effect. It would be nice if the left/right movement could be recognized and result in scrolling through the datalog;
up/down: Zoom in/out
left/right: Scroll left/right

It is used to create marks while taking the datalog in TunerStudio.
