OEM Toyota 1NZ-FE Ignition System, need help.

Hi everyone. I own a 2005 Toyota Echo (Yaris/Vitz) powered by a 1NZ-FE engine. Using half of a patch harness Im planing using the OEM electrical harness to wire-up the MS-2... Anyway, main concern right now is the Ignition system.

This is a 4 cylinders, using 4 Coil On Plug setup. COP have 4 wires each. Built in ingnitors.
What I know so far about the OEM fonctionning of these COP;
1.ECM receives signals from CAM sensor, CRANK sensor & various sensors.
2.ECM sends signals to COP through IGT1,IGT2,IGT3,IGT4. This is a pulse generation, the waveform show a 2V/DIV., 20msec/DIV.
3.ECM receives a confirmation signal from Coils (IGF) (Maybe this is the signal GND??)
4.By Using the OEM electrical harness, when ignition switch is on, I should have a 12V constant to each COP.
5.GND is GND

So far I know I need to make MOD to my MS-2 v3.00 to make them work. Ive been told its a ``5V PNP drive mod``.
I have the documentation about making the MOD, but no infos about how I wire everything on which pin of the DB37..???

Thanks, any help is very appreciated.

Hi,

Nice to know someone who is using MS2 V3 on a 1NZ-FE.

I just did one to my customer's Yaris. Running wasted spark setup.

Here's what I did:

Combine the signal wire of the COPS as 2 pairs.
* IGT1 + IGT4 --> Ignition Output from your Channel A 5V PNP mod
* IGT2 + IGT3 --> Ignition Output from your Channel B 5V PNP mod

Make sure you change the ignition setting to "Wasted Spark", "Going Low" in TunerStudio

Hope it helps.

Cheers!
Simon

Cool thanks! That part is perfect. By the way, where are you located?

What about the IGF (signal going from COP back to ECU)??
After reading a lot more. I think that IGF (E5 - 23 of ECM terminal) is the SIGNAL GND. So it would simply wire to a GND pin.

But why IGF exist on the oem terminals if its simply get back to ECU to get grounded...??
The description of IGF is: Ignition coil and igniter (ignition confirmation signal).
IGF is grounded at the same place of all IGT's

The IGF signal is an ignition confirmation. In Toyota school they called it "I Got Fire".

It's a square wave back to the factory ecu when the ignitor in the stock coil works.

If it is not present the stock ecu will shut down the injectors to prevent flooding the catalyst with fuel.

For a MS application you should be able to just not use those signals.

Or you may be able tie the IGF terminals from all the coils together and use that signal for a tachometer

Cool! Thanks a lot! So IGF signals could simply be ignored.

So in overall, all IGT1,2,3,4 will be going to Spark output of MS
The GND will be grounded at ms's gnd pins.
12V will be applied when ignition switch is on (Im using the OEM electrical harness)

That looks perfect. But last question is; the signal going from MS to COP (SPark X output), dont it need a signal gnd? I know there is already a ground but I though it was for the 12V current...

The ground is for the primary Ignition circuit. Ground it to the cyl head/ manifold with the other grounds.
