Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
Not sure if this is what's being asked, but I find it easier when checking some things (table-switching guard circuit, MS2 pin usage table, etc) to pop into the old online doc, vs rummaging through the pdf manual. Not sure if this is experience with the old vs inexperience with the new vs sheer laziness, but there it is ...

I haven't looked at the old docs since creating the new ones. However, please explore why you are doing that? What could be improved in the new ones to change your behaviour?dontz125 wrote:Not sure if this is what's being asked, but I find it easier when checking some things (table-switching guard circuit, MS2 pin usage table, etc) to pop into the old online doc, vs rummaging through the pdf manual. Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
Actually, I just downloaded the latest V3.0 Hardware manual, uS Harware, and 'Setting up' manual, and the TS manual. NOWHERE do I see the chart with all the optional pin functions (and it needs updating, by the way!); the logic inputs are only mentioned in passing in: "3.4.9.2 Switch inputs
Switch input options: Launch input, nitrous input, shift cut input."
I don't see any mention of what they do, how to set them, or what pins are involved. Table switching also needs to be mentioned here.

I always thought that looked a mess, so didn't include it.dontz125 wrote:NOWHERE do I see the chart with all the optional pin functions
The pins are listed within the "input" and "outputs" sections though?
TS ref manual section 13 ?how to set them, or what pins are involved. Table switching also needs to be mentioned here.

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
It's unclear, and incomplete. The new chart in the V3.0 hardware manual says that JS10 is on DIP40/17, and is a Digital input/output. The old chart showed that JS10 can be used for Second Trigger Input, Launch Control Input, Tacho Output, NOS Input, or Spark A (always for EDIS, optional for other). HUGE difference.
Also, the TS manual doesn't specify which pins can be used for what purpose. It says that "Switch Location (is) Enabled when Switch Source is set to “Hardware”. Selects where the switch is connected," but doesn't actually say where that is. You actually have to have TS open in front of you to make sense of it, and to plan your I/O pins. Annoying for people who know what they're doing, HARD for newbies.
*sigh* You'd think after 25+ years in the Army, I'd have grasped the concept of "Never volunteer!" Howzabout I sit down with the latest TS this weekend, and come up with an updated / cleaned-up version of the MS2 / uS / uSM Pin Usage Charts that I seem to be asking for?

If you think it is of value, then yes please. Also, where in the manuals do you think it should go ?dontz125 wrote: Howzabout I sit down with the latest TS this weekend, and come up with an updated / cleaned-up version of the MS2 / uS / uSM Pin Usage Charts that I seem to be asking for?

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
Hrm ... It's both inputs AND outputs, neither wiring nor hardware. Perhaps an appendix? It really was the last indexed entry in the old Hardware section of the manual.

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
There is an "Example wiring" section in the hardware manual that could be expanded to cover the planning of using the extra features. That could then be where the chart could be located. Or have an appendix for the chart but also elaborate on how to use the chart when planning a new installation (or even to see if you can do what you want to do) and what the constraints are.

Hi James, jsmcortina wrote:AudiA4QT wrote:Do people think it would be of value to provide an online PDF->HTML page by page viewer ? That way you could hyperlink directly to the page in the live manual instead of quoting a section number? I'm undecided on whether this just complicates things or if it makes it easier to provide support.
James
This could also be usefull in PDF file, while I dońt know if it can not open another PDF... I prefer PDF to HTML because it can be use offline in the field.

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
I'll second that. I/m currently doing pin-outs to connect the module to an existing FI wiring harness and I'm seeing what looks like a lot of un-used pins that could/will probably be re-tasked. But, I have no idea what can be re-tasked or what pins are commonly re-tasked to.dontz125 wrote:Actually, I just downloaded the latest V3.0 Hardware manual, uS Harware, and 'Setting up' manual, and the TS manual. Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
Hi James,
I think it will be usefull to ad informations about Rshunt in microsquirt hardware manual :
http://www.useasydocs.com/theory/vr.htm
@Matt => it may be valuable to print manuals and allow users to pay a little extra (optional buy) when they order MS to get them at same time in paper format. Just a though that James would confirm or not. I plan to do that for French manuals if James agree with it.
Cheers,
Manu

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
I'd not seen that Microsquirt VR page before. However, is it good to advise customers to open up their Microsquirt or is it better to use an in-loom shunt resistor as MS3-Pro does? (I'm not sure)
Perhaps list it as an option?
I'm happy for users or distributors to supply paper copies of the manuals. Just a word of caution at the moment though because the manuals are under development. With the helpful feedback on this forum I am making changes every few days.

Re: MS2 new documentation discussion
The uS case still isn't sealed, so opening the case is no different than opening a MS box - unplug cable, remove screws, remove cover. Now, whether you want someone who bought a "fully assembled plug'n'play" unit due to their own (perceived or otherwise) inadequate electronic skills to try to fill one of those tiny things is a different matter, and it might be worthwhile to mention the option of an in-harness shunt resistor for those of a reluctant nature.

The shunt note was already in place, I added the SB method as an alternative.dontz125 wrote:Now, whether you want someone... to try to fill one of those tiny things is a different matter, and it might be worthwhile to mention the option of an in-harness shunt resistor for those of a reluctant nature.

Apparently, I'm either blind or dense today. Where is this mentioned, and what (no doubt glaringly obvious in retrospect) is "SB"?
