MicroSquirt Ignition error
Hello all, I'm nearing the final steps of being able to turn on my engine but have run into some issues with ignition settings.
My setup is a Toyota 2JZ-GE utilizing Microsquirt V3 with MSExtra 3.4.2. I'm trying to get my timing through the stock distributor (Nippon Denso dual wheel, 24 teeth and 1 tooth on the second wheel) while using ls2/truck coils in a wasted cop setup for ignition.
Following the settings within the hardware manual for (6.9.11 NipponDenso CAS with single G tooth) I continuously receive a message from tunerstudio stating the following:
"The following error was reported by the MegaSquirt: Only two spark outputs allowed on MicroSquirt"
In order to get the error message to stop I have to reload the firmware and switch either the tooth amount or switching from wasted spark cop to single coil.
The wiring for the coils is as follows:
A = Coil Primary Ground (to engine block)
B = Signal Ground (to engine block)
C = +5V Ignition signal from MicroSquirt® controller ( Cylinders 1-3 = Ampseal pin 12 for IGN1. Cylinders 4-6 = pin 11 for IGN2)
D = Switched +12V Supply to Coil Primary
The wiring for the distributor is as follows:
g-/ground = cylinder head ground
g2 = not used
g1 = vr2 +
ne = vr1 +
vr1/2 - & shield = cylinder head ground
Attached is also the msq I've setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
Ok first things first a 2J is a 6cylinder so it requires 3 spark outputs for Wasted Spark. Read from here http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/html/Mic ... .4-58.html
Next thing your msq shows Wasted COP has been selected instead of Waste Spark. Wasted COP requires 6 spark outputs which microsquirt does not have.

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
Thanks for the response. I figured I could just split the banks into two instead of three. So I'll need to add an extra ignition out as shown in the link. As the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, I'd split it into 1-6 ign1, 5-2 ign 2, 3-4 ign 3 correct?
I also noticed after I submitted the post that the wiring for the distributor was different from what's posted within the manual. I don't recall where I remember getting the wiring info from, but I'll be changing that tomorrow as well.
I appreciate the help

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
Sounds like the right pairs to me.

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
I have everything working now however, I'm not getting any spark from the coils triggered by IGN 1 out.
Coils were tested for ground, 12v, etc and everything looked good on the multimeter. However I'm not getting a signal/voltage from IGN 1 when testing the coils within tunerstudio (B and C are working fine). I also checked my wiring and there are no shorts for IGN 1 from the ecu to coils. Is there another setting I have to change in order for all three IGN outs to work or could there possibly be an issue with the MS hardware? I opened up the case and inspected the board and couldn't find anything that looked burnt. The last time I used the ecu was about a year and a half ago and IGN 1 worked fine.
Didn't have much time to further trouble shoot it since it got dark. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
No just ign 2 and wled.
Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
i would try switching one of the working coils to ign1 to test if its the coil or possibly the ecu

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
I had swapped in a working coil from one of the other banks and still no spark. I also moved the coil from the non working bank to a working one and the coil fired off without any issues. So all the coil packs work which is leading me to think the issue lies within the microsquirt hardware. Is there anyway to swap IGN1 with ALED or any testing I can do on the physical board?

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
If I set wled as spark A within tunerstudio would ign 2 still be B and would aled be C instead of D?

That setting only changes Spark A.Shock_Strauss wrote:If I set wled as spark A within tunerstudio would ign 2 still be B and would aled be C instead of D?

Just to be clear, it would look like this then? wled = A ign2= B aled = Djsmcortina wrote:That setting only changes Spark A.Shock_Strauss wrote:If I set wled as spark A within tunerstudio would ign 2 still be B and would aled be C instead of D?

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
No. As I said, the setting ONLY changes Spark A. So trying to use 3 spark outputs won't work. The "WLED" spark A setting is only intended to be used with single coil.

Re: MicroSquirt Ignition error
I got it now, thanks James.
I'm going to troubleshoot some more now, but if all else fails I guess I'll just buy another microsquirt ecu.

Yours should be repairable if there is a hard fault. Contact Peter Florance, he's in Virginia Beach.

Will do, lucky me VB is only about 20 minutes away. Thanks again, hopefully it's something simple.jsmcortina wrote:Yours should be repairable if there is a hard fault. Contact Peter Florance, he's in Virginia Beach.
