Time to do some upgrades

Post by euro2fast4u »

I built this ecu back in 09. Had a lot of battles along the way however it got me in 4th this year in the local auto x. Its now time to do some more upgrades to the ecu / more tuning.

Engine / chassis: 1987 BMW 325e, m20b27, I head.
Custom wiring harness.
MS2 V3.0
six evo 8 injectors 550cc Low impedance - 2 ohms.

1. I have recently realized that my low z injectors are probably causing my voltage spikes/drops that i have been battling forever.

My current thought is that i do not have the correct fly back circuit per the ms manual located here http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/V3trouble.htm
Item # 16

datalog of spike http://www.megafileupload.com/cfvI/2016 ... .51.16.msl
Current Tune: http://www.megafileupload.com/cfvK/CurrentTune.msq

My Question really is, i need a sketch or a walk through of how to modify my ecu to incorporate this new circuit. I am so far out side the loop on what each drive does and i dont want to screw something up.

EDIT: The more i dig the more i find old information. I can not find a walk through on how to fix this flyback ciruit and remove the noise.

After writing all this i think ill make new thread for the other two items. Adding Launch control, and adding electric fan control.

You might be just better off doing something like this:
http://jbperf.com/p&h_board/index.html

Edit: Actually sorry, that board can only do 4 injectors,s o you'd have to use two of them.
Do not load someone elses tune and expect it to work for you!

are you running a turbo do you need the 550cc injectors? you could try adding series resistor to the injectors so they work like high z injectors but will slow them down slightly.
or read section 13.6 @ http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/html/MS2 ... 4-196.html

launch control switch input:

I have an RV8 running the original low impedance injectors without resistors (PWM) in batch mode - so 4 per driver. I too had those spikes in a log. There is a mod to sort that - you run an extra and independent +12v feed to the injector driver circuits. You'll find details in the manual. But although it got rid of the spikes in the log, it made no difference I could tell to the running of the car.

That's an ancient web-page. Your mainboard (V3.0) incorporates that flyback circuit already.

As Dave says though, re-routing the 12V feed may help and is covered in the manual here: http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/html/MS2 ... 4-196.html

Also, as a first step, ensure you have a capacitor installed across "H1 Boot" on the mainboard. It was 0.22u.

Wow that k you everyone for the help. This spike and drop seems to cause more then one issue and was just the first thing in the log that occurs.

I don't mind supplying power to the tip125 but just want to make sure it will help.

Guess what I don't have the cap on hi boot. Photo in a few hours.

Yes i will be running a turbo again, new one is waiting for all of this stuff to get fixed first before i add boost.

Thank you for the launch control :D

looks like step one is to install a cap on h1.
if that doesn't help run independent power lines to the center of the drivers.
install the circuit for launch control.
your link for the fan control takes me to the beginning and searching the page didn't result any direction.

Perfect thank you. So then i guess my next question would be. How do i connect to the db37 for outputs/input wires.

I also wanna make sure i choose the correct one.

you have 4 spare pins on the db37
spr1 = pin 3 db37
spr2 = pin 4 db37
spr3 = pin 5 db37
spr4 = pin 6 db37

I'm a big fan of P&H drivers.
Correctly identify your MS ecu here
Read the Do's and Don'ts to avoid the common pitfalls before starting your install or asking for help
Use only these manuals other manuals may cause brain damage or worse.

Question. I wanna have variable fan speed control. i think this is only on off.

Also i do not have idle control. Can i use those outputs and wires for any of these modifications?

how do you mean variable fan speed, like a 2 speed fan relay then yes, but not pwm variable fan control. and yeah did you populate the fidle bits? if so they could drive a relay.

My current fan is very loud and over kill except for hot track days.

it curently turns off and on. I would like to have the ecu control a ssr that would allow me run the fan at different speeds.

ie

below 160° = 0% speed
below 170° = 25% speed
below 180° = 40% speed
below 190° = 50% speed
below 200° = 75% speed
below 210° = 100% speed

I would also like to turn it off when its above a certain RPM and TPS or maybe by rpmdot. idk

you will need ms3 for that.

Just ordered .22uf capacitors and a gm screw in iat sensor.
