NOOB Harley V-twin No Spark

Post by mjhillen »

im having trouble getting with the microsquirt, I cant get any spark from either bank. I need some noobie help to make sure i have my configurations correct.
I am running it in HD 32-2 mode, Cam is MAP sensor, Going High, Waisted COP, D14 output. Im not sure that the crank signal is great but it will pulse the injectors while cranking.
I have seen MS documents about dual fire mode but it is not an option in the drop-down menu..... Any help would be appreciated.

yesterday I figured out the spark issue, Wrong coil. Harley coil needs an igniter so i had 2 LS2 truck coils that i wired-up. I now have spark but am not sure how to establish proper timing angles.

Also, the 32-2 setting will only allow for a waisted spark output. Can that work in an oddfire configuration?

Sure. Select toothed wheel, 32-2, MAP for cam, set your odd-fire angle. That should give you COP and sequential fuel.

at this point, It looks like i have dropped MAP somehow. It shows up in my gauges but doesn't show up on the composite logger.

Crank signal looks messy, smoothing doesnt seem to help at all.
Checked sensor, clean, have .030 clearance between teeth...I need you guys!

Im running a microsquirt w/ ms2/extra ver 3.4.2 It doesnt allow me to adjust the oddfire angle or the main and return angle.
I show MAP reading in the gauges and it moves while cranking but it still doesnt show up in the composite log graph.

Change your spark type from "Harley 32-2" to "Toothed Wheel." That should give you more options.

In toothed wheel option, will it use MAP for phasing? I only have i crank sensor.

Yes. If "Harley mode" only allows wasted spark, it may ignore the MAP sensor in that setting.

The engine is oddfire and does use the cam sensor to detect the phasing and fire the coil at the correct time. I don't think you can achieve that without using the special Harley mode. Please bench test to confirm otherwise.

*scratching head* He's got a 32-2 crankwheel (I *assume* there's nothing fancy about it), a MAP sensor for phase, and a known odd-fire angle.

What am I missing? Not being a smartass (for once! :D ), I really am curious.

He does not say what year or which motor.

The cam sensor was removed in later twin cam motors. I dont remember how the early MM systems determined phasing.

It's a 2004 twin cam. It has a crank sensor only.

I am seeing 2 sparks from the front coil, 1 spark from the rear.
Has anyone looked at the tooth logs?

What are the chances that the firmware could be corrupted?
I have Advanced and retarded the timing angles as much as the ECM will allow, with the cam sensor in standard and inverted and I get the exact same firing sequence. It does not appear to change the spark timing.

Please also post a regular datalog.

The tooth log looks like it is probably correct but could be difficult for the code to correctly determine the missing tooth. You can see the oddfire nature of the engine that the HD 32-2 mode is designed to work with. On the cylinder that fires closer to the missing tooth the engine is slowing down a lot and giving long bars on the tooth logger.
Have you tried cranking with the throttle slightly open, that might help it crank a little faster.

The battery was fully charged when i data logged. This engine only cranks at about 375 RPM due to changes in the primary gear ratio.(starter drives the clutch hub, chain drives crankshaft)
I will have to get a datalog tonight.
How can i look at the code to see what timing it is calling for in the 32-2 mode?
