How does this look to you guys?

Post by Harv »

So I'm starting over with a complete new tune on new firmware and a new ignition setup. The car is a 1969 BMW 2002 With a 2230 cc bored and stroked motor with a 304 degre cam and ITB's. I had my MS2 v3.0 moded by a well regarded squirter to fire off a four post dual coil (like an EDIS coil but from DIY) in a wasted spark setup using one of their Quadspark modules. I initially got it to run but started getting configuration errors that didn't make any sence. I power cycled everything and the message subsided. but then the car wouldn't run. Hey why isn't other things running? Why is the fuse to the coil blown? Hey why the dwell set at 60?

OK, New firmware, New coil, and a good look over the board. All looks good.

Can someone look over my MSQ and tell me if things look ok for a startup?

Resistor Plugs?

Suppression wires (not low resistance)?

Coil mounted on motor? (not on ungrounded valve cover)

Bad battery?

Battery charger on boost?

Bad/noisy alternator?

Low impedance injectors?

Grounding concerns? (see section 3.2 of the manual)

Blown coil fuse is usually caused by "going high" "going low" not set correctly.
Correctly identify your MS ecu here
Read the Do's and Don'ts to avoid the common pitfalls before starting your install or asking for help
Use only these manuals other manuals may cause brain damage or worse.

Yes on the resister plugs, not sure on the wires, they are standard MSD 8mm wires I made up without resistor ends. The Coil is a IGN-4 from DIY. I used it with an EDIS module with no problems for over a year. It's mounted to the firewall and DIY says it's not required to be grounded.

Battery is good.

Alt is good

5 OHM injectors. I had some noise in my battery signal but was solved with a capasitor in the boot spot on the board.

New harness with the 5 grounds going to the block and the dedicated sensor return for the temps and TPS.

Measure the resistance of your plug wires, less than 1k is no good.

Ford puts a capacitor on the + to the coil.

9 pin serial cable for tuning?
(No USB cable is best, although this usually causes TS lockups, not frazzled settings.)

Noisy 12v source for MS? (Should be via relay off the battery.)

How is the quad spark grounded? (Not to MS)

I am using a known working 232 cable to a USB converter to the laptop.

I'm using the capacitor that came with my Ford coil.

MS has its own relay.

I'll check the wires

Quadspark is grounded to the block at a bellhousing bolt. It's not the same ground as the MS.

Here is a datalog of it somewhat idling. Why is it that every time I start fresh the mixture is WAY too rich?

One thing that jumps out in the log is the map holds a constant 98.9 kpa through the entire log.

Also the blue tracer in the VE map does not match the kpa in the data log.

The rpm seems to track correctly but not the kpa.

I also noticed the afr goes from lean on start up to rich and a lost sync at counter 46.989.

Thanks for the help!

As I was sitting in the movie theater with my daughter (Beauty and the Beast) it dawned on my that the vac signal was not hooked up to the MS!

I'll correct that and try tomorrow and post again.

That will definitely make it run VERY rich.
Do not load someone elses tune and expect it to work for you!

More than not I find the glitches we encounter are self inflicted.

Well today I got it to run better. Actually drivable! Here's a datalog and a MSQ.

Now about that 4 wire Jeep iac...
