Honda 12+1 trigger

Post by nano »

Hello!

A friend is working on a swap project for a Honda R18a engine into a 1995 Honda Civic. We want to manage the engine thru a Megasquirt 2, but we are not 100% sure about the crank trigger decoder.

It's a 12+1 trigger wheel

Image

There is any way to decode it using MS2/Extra firmware?

Thanks!

Another option is to cut away the +1 tooth, plus 1-3 others - Honda loves its 12-3 on bikes.

I'm pretty sure that a couple of variants of that are supported on MS3.

Same here ms2 v3 this is for my sons k24a4 motor wasted spark I have the motor running now with a 36-1 wheel but the wheel I welded to the damper has a jump to it so I really can't get the crank sensor close enough for a good read so I have to figure what tooth to cut off on the wheel do I just skip 9 tooth like a 36-1 setup ?

Skip the one to get ~90 deg angle (tooth 2 or 3, and also the extra +1 tooth)

I know I'm asking for to much but could it be possible you could make a drawing of what tooth I need to cut off thanks much.

With "Toothed Wheel" the 90 deg angle isn't crucial as you will confirm and adjust it with a strobe, however it is a good aim-for figure.

As an example, see how the wheel would be phased for EDIS4 (which requires a 90deg angle.)

Green = aprox. Sensor location
Red = tooth to be cut.

One more question because it is a 3 wire crank sensor do I wire it up like a hall sensor or like a vr sensor ? I have a cherry hall sensor with a 1k resistor On the car now should I wire up the crank sensor like the hall sensor or remove the 1k resistor? Thank for your help.

The need for a pull up resistor depends on the sensor construction and is only appllies to hall (maybe optical) sensors. The pull up is to create a square wave signal, usually 5v.

A VR sensor has a different type of output, its output is a sine wave, and the voltage can vary widely.

ok so treat it as a vr sensor and remove the resistor, the crank sensor has 3 wires power I know and sensor return, for ground where do I connect that wire to ? thanks.

No.
This is a hall sensor. Wire it as it is

No I did not say to remove the resistor.

Section 5.2.3 of The Fine Manual (TFM) covers this and should answer your questions.
