1988 tbi 454

Post by cj599 »

i have a basically stock 1988 454 tbi in my camaro and i am confused on the injector characteristics in tuner studio the injectors i have are early 454 and i am running a microsquirt v2.0 bored tuner studio says v2.89. also i was having some issues with getting a good rpm signal i am using the option- method wired to a accell hei. where you supply 12v to one wire i believe it was opt+ i think i cant remember and i had it working great and accidentally loaded a tune where my ignition settings are messed up anyone able to help? a base map to get me goin would be awesome but probably dosnt exist thanks for the help

Most installs use the "vrin", not "optoin", but tell us more about the dizzy and how you want to use it. Is that Accel product literally a clone of GM's HEI (which, HEI-7 or 8?)? Do you want to fire the coil using the HEI module, or do all control/firing from MS? If you want to move past the HEI module, what kind of sensor is in the dizzy itself, VR, or Hall?

Post your MSQ and an MSL.

Don't worry about the mismatch between the PCB version and TS version, they have no correlation.

Do be sure to verify spark timing while cranking, before trying to start the engine.

PS: This kind of thread should really go on the "Assembly" or "General Support" forum; you might get more views and help there.

I know nothing about MicroSquirt, but I am curious....... Why do you have your ignition set to EDIS if you are running HEI?

And exactly did you accomplish that?

FWIW, over the years I have run EDIS, HEI (7 pin) and most recently, toothed wheel (36-1).

Initially I had some issues with HEI but those cleared right up when I switched inputs from Opto to VR.

Im not exactly sure i switched the ignition settings back and it started working but its kinda off and on when it wants to show rpm i think it has to do with the injector settings but i dont know what they should be

I seriously doubt that your 'injector settings' will have any effect on whether your're seeing an RPM indication or not!

Can you post a log of an attempted start?

Ah, a whole new symptom! The VE values should have no effect on power to the ECU. There is likely a problem with how this install is wired.

So, it's a large cap, HEI dizzy with mechanical and vacuum advance?

If so, look at using the coil negative connection input wiring and settings for an RPM input into the uS. Connect to the tach terminal on the cap.

If it's a 7 pin version that uses computer control the connections and setting will be different.

Not a issue with wiring an that is how i have it connect to the distributor with the fly back method and the opt- wire it would never work like you stated tryed it many times

I think it might be a noise issue i seen it just to like 4k rpm while cranking once some times its will run for 15 minutes with out a issue also i used factory metripack and weather pack connections with the right crimp tool im very good with wiring

Okay, I took several deep breaths and will try to keep this thread meaningful...

The "injector characteristics" you have set seem good enough to get the engine started. I can't help much more on those because I am fairly unfamiliar with the Microsquirt and its TS menus/settings. It's not that I won't try to help you, just that I wont' try to give BS when I don't know. However, I am fairly certain that nothing you do with the injectors or their settings should drop power to any type ECU and cause it to reboot or lose com. You have to be willing to consider that you have a "wiring problem" and be willing to investigate/eliminate that possibility or we will be crippled in our efforts to help you. I can suggest some ways to investigate if you are willing.

"Large cap HEI" doesn't tell me much; especially since it isn't a GM dizzy. I could put any number of things, even contact points and a capacitor, under one of those caps. At this point I'm not even clear if it is a 7-pin or 8-pin GM module, or even one of those at all. How about pictures and P/N of the dizzy you are trying to connect to. Like others, using "EDIS" doesn't make sense to me, but I may be wrong. There is no use me trying to learn more about this MicroS-to-HEI interface, to help you, if I don't even know what you actually have.

Posting sketches of how you have things wired may also help. They don't have to be real pretty, but be sure to show all switches, fuses, relays, connectors, etc. and indicate size of wiring. Indicate where wiring is shielded and/or twisted.

I am not breathing as deeply as Bill............ How many times does it need to be said?

There is no one here who is not willing to help you!!

I don't think anyone is questioning the quality of your work or parts! But, clearly there is an issue aside from any settings in your MS box!

Ken

EDIT: Could you please post your most recent tune and a log from that tune?
