MS2 V3.0 - Camshaft triggering 3cyl Daihatsu

Post by frogcow »

I guess I am just looking for justification about MS-Extra trigger options for my setup. The Hardware manual :RTFM: has some Daihatsu modes supported but I could not find the GTti setup. Thanks for your time and input

I have a Daihatsu GTti 3 cylinder 4 stroke engine. On the end of the camshaft is a distributor with two internal toothed wheels, one has three teeth spaced 120° apart, the other has 24 teeth with two opposing teeth removed to make it appear like a 12-1.

I have had no luck with the b&g code triggering 24-1 or 12-1 driven at cam speed . Since I ground the second tooth off the 24 tooth wheel my cranking rpm has risen from 100 - 300rpm to between 700 and 1500 rpm which is why I am asking for guidance. I had a look at the processor input signal from the VR sensor with tachref and there is a phenomenon I can not explain, the gaps between teeth alternate in width where at 12 oclock and three oclock the gaps between teeth are twice as wide as they are at 6 oclock and 9 oclock. I thought maybe I had bent the shaft but on inspection it seems okay. The other thing it might be is the wheel itself is the size of a hubnut and the teeth width are the thickness of a small coin so perhaps it is too small to be effective? :|

I have a 36-1 wheel I could have a go at installing and I can purchase a sensor for it and install it to the crank and hopefully then I can get it started on the B&G Code, however I was wondering if the MS-Extra code might support any of these combinations before I travel down this path.

The engine currently cranks, catches and dies instantly.

Unfortunately, B&G code doesn't give many options to troubleshoot the RPM input. In MS2/Extra code, you can use a tooth log to view how the signal is getting through to the processor.

MS2/Extra should support that combination I think. There's an option for the cam tooth to be "Per cylinder".

Matt - The main reason for the higher rpm was the tune restore point had 24-1 instead of 12-1 in the toothed wheel settings. When I restored the original tune and cranked the rpm returned to 170rpm. Worth a try though.

James - I have loaded MS-Extra code and created a tune. My current thought process is as follows: Install 36-1 crank trigger wheel, grind two teeth off the three toothed wheel in the distributor to make a single toothed cam wheel, 36-1/1. Would this require hardware mods? I only have one vr circuit as per attached wiring diagram. Oh and I have assembled the board i.a.w B&G code just for clarification but promise not to read the megamanual while trying with Extra.

I am open to all options that allow the engine to run with spark control. I have a single coil (new) , new resistor plugs, new factory efi leads, The distributor has been modified, it had a 24 tooth and a three tooth wheel but now it has a 24-2 opposing and a 3 tooth wheel. ( Both VR sensors)

I have a feeling I can have the 36-1 crank wheel knocked up in the next day or two. Want to get it running this weekend. Cheers for reading :RTFM:

:RTFM: Okay so this is something I will want to do at some point however is there something that will get me by in the mean time with my current single VR circuit?

Okay what I have done is changed my settings to trick the computer to think it is running a 6 cylinder wasted spark so I can get it running temporarily. I have swapped over cylinder 2 and 3 spark leads out of the distributor to get firing order to run A-b-C-a-B-c.

I have changed no. of cylinders to 6, I have changed number of injectors to 6, running three squirts per cycle. I have changed required fuel back to what it would have been when running just a straight three. Running untimed injection. Running toothed wheel, I thought I might try 24-2 on the cam first, then maybe 12-1 on the crank (cam driven).

Have I missed anything? :D

I have tested it today, it behaves the same as on the B&G Code, 24-2 on the cam, catches but dies instantly. 12-1 it doesn't like, both had cranking rpms above 400, there is some play in my distributor shaft, I will try and get another one and also order the Dual VR Modification.

Do you have a picture of how the cam sensor is set up?

Thanks Matt, FYI I have ordered a dual VR conditioning board, from what I understand the best way to run the ignition on this engine is a 36-1 crank wheel and a one tooth wheel in the distributor.

8) This is a small description on how the factory distributor is used to calculate where the engine is in its cycle.

Also a picture of my completed 36-1 trigger wheel attached to crank pulley.

From which material did you make the 36-1 wheel ?
By the picture it almost looks like alluminium ?

It's a Ford Edis trigger wheel probably from a falcon. The VR sensor from the ford falcon likes to stick to it so I'm not too worried at this point.

Your trigger settings are wrong for the wheel that you have. You don't have a 24-2 wheel you have a 24-1-1 wheel. Just wire the three tooth wheel in and run basic trigger so that you can get it running batch firing the injectors. If you have small injectors it will run fine.

Your easiest option regarding a trigger arrangement would have been to cut only one tooth off the 24 tooth wheel and then used the 24-1 setting. This is what I'm running with coil on plug and sequential injection.

You can use the 36-1 on the crank, but to run full sequential you will need to run something from the cam, like a one tooth. I can't remember what configurations exactly can be used with the MS2 though so make sure you read the manual.
