MSPNP BMW M30 VR/Trigger Questions

Post by 240rsmaxi »

Hi,
I have an MSPNP (B8793 with the red board) on an E28 M30 with an E34 60-2 damper and VR setup. I've tried everything to get any kind of trace on the onboard scope/RPM/Sync to no avail. The VR AC wave and missing tooth look great on an actual scope, reading off the backside of the 55pin breakout connector. I wired in a hall sensor to see if maybe it was setup for a square wave (no luck) but currently the VR is installed (a new OEM sensor). VR peaks are at 8.2V so I would think the ECU should pick it up even if there are other associated issues.

I checked each contact on the ECU and they all appear to be supplying what they should except The 5v supply for the TPS is a bit low at 4.8 and actually drops to 4 when it is plugged in (but TPS calibrates fine)

The car is wired as factory but with a new harness. Single coil/distributor, 2x Inj outputs, 60lb Deka injectors, K27 turbo, dual plenum intake and a few other things.

A little background...This is a project my dad started but ive done most of. The E28 holds a special place in our hearts so I didnt want to half ass much but also didn't have time to do everything to my best ability. When I got the MSPNP in 2012 I was looking for the easiest solution ECU wise but the OEM harnesses I got were all old and crusty with cracking wires after 30 years of heat. In hindsight a ms3 with seq and wasted spark would be ideal. Maybe down the road (I'd like to eventually make a manifold and get a GTX3576 on it) but the goal is to get this running, mapped and get my dad behind the wheel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've been going crazy over this:)

Thank you.

-Bill

are you getting any signal on the tooth logger?

there is a adjuster for the crank sensor on mspsp i believe maybe that needs a tweak

I tried the adjuster all the way CW and CCW and in the middle. The tooth, trigger and composite show nothing when cranking.
Maybe I am using the high speed logger incorrectly. I press start, it starts ticking away up to 100 seconds and during that time I crank the engine.

VR sensor signal is wired to pin 31 on the 55 pin connector.

on a e30 pin31 of the m1.3 ecu is the cylinder id sensor the one round the plug lead. the crank sensor comes in on pin's pin48 for +ve and pin 49 for the -ve

Grom_E30,
That was it :D I had tried that input with the Hall sensor but not with the factory VR. It started right up. I've had trouble getting it restarted but our old engineer will be down on friday (who will map the engine). Thanks for your input :yeah!:
