Car starts, then dies - 5.0l, EDIS, Microsquirt

Post by kendaliscool08 »

With the current tune, the car "ran", but like crap (it was never tuned or driven... only idled in the garage) until the battery died (wasn't using an alternator). Once the battery was replaced, the car will start run and then die.

Setup:
Car - 1995 BMW 318i
ECU - Microsquirt v3 (fuel and ignition tables based on base mustang) https://www.diyautotune.com/product/mic ... -ecu-only/
Engine - stock 5.0l from a 1999 explorer
Fuel - Return style from a fox mustang with 19lb/hr injectors
Ignition - EDIS 8 module with 2 4 tower coil packs. Using stock 36-1 wheel on crankshaft.

I've checked the valve on the fuel rail and have confirmed that I have fuel (and the fact that the garage smells like gas). I assume that i have spark because the car will start, but dies. Also, if i give it any throttle, it wont even think about firing.

Thoughts?

You didn't specify what MS you have, maybe MSPNPG2?
Under Idle Control, you did not select an idle valve.
Base map (tune) for your engine (with distributor) is here.

He said it's Microsquirt, so I assume it's a Microsquirt and not a Microsquirt Module (MSPNP).
So if that's the case, be careful with the maps in the link provided.
Do not load someone elses tune and expect it to work for you!

Does the engine run as long as you have the key in start position and die when released to run position?

The reason I ask is because the pulse width turns off about the time you would be releasing the key to run position.

Also for EDIS dwell should be set to fixed duty and spark hardware latency set to 0.

He can use them for comparison to see what's missing or far off.

Ok, I've updated the tune after doing some more research: changed the spark latency to 0s and made sure the idle valve was enabled. I changed the frequency between 94, 124, and 313mh and it didn't seem to help. (I read online that ford IACs like 300+).

I remember last time i had this issue, i upgraded the firmware and that seemed to fix the issue... so I'm going to do that later today.

I also attached the new tune + logs.

I reloaded the firmware and recalibrated everything and it will now run for about 15 seconds but like crap... The AFRs are ~8 or lower... so insanely rich. Next step is to recalibrate the wideband (Innovate LC-2 with a Bosch 4.9) to rule that out.

Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rblpKXpkTIk

Questions:
- where the wideband is installed its only reading one bank. Would this cause the low AFRs or the VE fuel tables?
- The engine is out of a 99' explorer with a stock throttle body. For idle control, what are you guys running in terms of frequency and inverted/not inverted?

1. No. Does depend where in the exhaust you mounted it. WB has no effect if engine is cold.
2. Frequency - 124Hz
Normal or non-inverted depends on exactly what MS you have.

Looks like you have it configured for a GM MAP sensor. Is this correct?

Yep, it's the GM 3 bar. Fortunately for me (and unfortunately for my wife), diyautotune is 15 minutes from my house.

This is the exact one:

Yep. thats the one.

You can see in one of the pictures, the EDIS module is mounted on a plate on the firewall beside the GM map sensor and there's also a stud for my sensor grounds.

In one of the others, you can see the ground strap from the intake to the body(which is also where the microsquirt/EDIS is grounded).

Explorer 5.0 in a BMW? That sounds like a great idea.

Here's my tune - I'm using an MS3X with sequential fuel and LS coils for ignition, so I can't help you with your specific fuel/spark configuration, but it looks like I have a lot more after-start enrichment (both % and taper cycles). Cranking pulsewidth is close.

Maybe I'm missing something on your tune, but it says Idle Valve type is set to "none"? I'm using the stock Explorer idle valve, check my tune for the settings I used. I ran it open loop for a couple years and just got around to setting up closed loop last month. Worked great both ways.
