Analog Oil Pressure Gauge

Post by stanglx2002 »

I am currently using an Autometer Analog Oil Pressure gauge on a pillar gauge pod.

I wanted to know if I could take the signal wire and run it to the MSPNP Gen2? If so, which one of the below can I use?

1. Cam sensor input
2. Table switch input
3. Clutch Switch
4. Tach output
5. Chassis Ground
6. Switched 12VDC (0.5A Max)
7. Boost control solenoid
8. Injector A output
9. Injector B output
10. Knock sensor input
11. CANBus high
12. CANBus low
13. Launch control input
14. Spark D output
15. Spark C output
16. Spark B output
17. Spark A output
18. Injector C output
19. External MAP sensor input
20. IAT sensor input
21. Oxygen sensor input
22. Signal Ground
23. 5VDC Vref
24. Output 1 relay control (ALED)
25. Output 2 relay control (WLED)
26. Injector D Output

Probably not unless the gauge does 0-5v. What is your goal? To log oil pressure?

I am putting together a digital dash with a 7" LCD screen and RPi3, and want to display the oil pressure in Tunerstudio.

I wanted to see if it was possible to use the already wired 1-wire analog pressure sensor or be forced to go to a 3-wire pressure transducer.

You will need 3 wire so it can do 0-5v
Do not load someone elses tune and expect it to work for you!

That's what I thought I would have to do then.

This is the transducer I was looking at using:

Next question is how would you recommend the wiring to be done:
1. Red - Tap into engine harness or run back to MS?
2. Black - Ground to block or back to where the MS is grounded
3. Green - Which of the 1-26 options is used?

The MSPNP Gen 2 doesn't have much in the way of extra I/O; the two extra ADC channels on the MicroSquirt Module are used for knock input and a realtime barometric pressure sensor. If you want to give up using one of those, let me know which input and what MSPNP variant this is, and I'll go over how to set it up.

Matt, I thank you in advance for your help on this.

This is the one I am using from you: MegaSquirtPNP G2 EEC4A8 for 86-93 Ford Mustang 5.0

I would not be using the knock sensor on this car, so this could be repurposed. If you could please help with how to set this up that would be highly appreciated.

I am also looking at incorporating the fuel level gauge as well, so if you have feedback on this that would be great. I will also be installing another microsquirt as a Transmission Control connected via CAN Bus if that helps as well. Matt, I will be coming by your office to purchase it directly from you if that helps as well.

I and others here have had issues with the cheap eBay sensors - poor quality and bad calibration from the start, and eventual leaking and failure.

Red to the 5V "VREF" signal.
Black to the sensor ground.
Green to your input channel.

That's an easy way to ruin your engine and perhaps crash your car if the oil gets under your tyres.

In my case oil was leaking through the sensor body into the connector and giving me false readings. I'm glad it wasn't the fuel sensor, as fuel dripping around the hot engine bay would be a lot more dangerous.

Depending on how much of the IO is used for the transmission controller, yes you could use IO from the second unit for pressures etc.
Your other option is to install something like the TinyIOX which can also talk via CAN and has a bunch of I/O.

Thank you for the feedback on the sensor. Figures that the eBay sensor isn't worth anything.

I will look into the AEM sensor recommended. I believe there should be extra I/O's on the transmission controller, so I will look into using one of them. I still have the external gauge on the B-pillar, so it doesn't effect the installation of the digital dash.

What are your guy's recommendation for the 5V vRef and the Ground. Should I tap into the stock engine wiring harness or just run it back to the Transmission Controller?

VREF and GND should both come from where ever your signal is going to.

For the Oil Pressure I was thinking this for wiring (Is this correct?):
- Red - Pin 23
- Black - Pin 22
- Green - Pin 10 (I will not be installing a knock sensor on this car)

For Fuel Level I need some assistance on how to make this work????

The pins you selected will work for oil pressure ( once you follow Matt's instruction )

You don't have enough I/O for fuel level as you'll need still another ADC.

Sounds like you might need to step up to an MS3 based system or else add a CAN based I/O extender

I wish I could upgrade to the MS3, but are not able funding wise to change off this platform. I do thank you for the feedback on the Oil Pressure and hope to hear back from Matt soon.

I did find this for the Fuel Level yesterday doing further research on how to incorporate the fuel level into MS. This addressed both of the issues I have been running into of getting the fuel level sensor signal from analog to digital, and also the "fuel sloshing" reading issue since TS doesn't have the ability to show a reading average over a sample period of time like a minute. If I don't have enough ADC for the fuel level with the current MS for the engine I should have extras with the transmission MS I will be installing.

Here is the "Gas Signal Conditioner" I found:
