Adding Oil temperature to MS2
Hi!
I have a MS2 running great for quite a while now.
As I've been tracking the car a bit more, I would like to add an Oil temp sensor to be able to log and show up in the dash.
How easy is it to add such sensor to MS2?
I have a lot of spare wires as I don't use Idle valve, etc etc.
So, what do I need to do? I tried to check this before, but I get random information, and would appreciate some help.
Thanks!
Gonçalo

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
You need a spare 0-5V input. ADC6 or ADC7 will work if available.
This is the place in the manual to start. Scroll to section 4.10

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
Awesome info.
Now, the questions
A temp sensor, that is not 0-5V, but the ones with just 1 pin, can be used? I assume it's resistor instead of 0-5V?
Something like this? I have this already in the car and spares.
I believe I have those wires/pins spare, as I don't run Stepper motors, etc.
I have this info in my Excel file for the build (too long ago )
ECU PIN DB37 PIN PLUG PIN
JS0(IAC1) Tacho out IAC1A 25
JS2(IAC2) Boost Control IAC2A 29
JS5 Baro Corr
JS4 Knock IAC1B 27
JS7 Launch IAC2B 31
And pins are:
20 gauge Blue with white stripe IAC1A Idle air control stepper (MS2/MS3) 25
20 gauge Gray VREF 5 volt reference voltage 26
20 gauge White with blue stripe IAC1B Idle air control stepper (MS2/MS3) 27
So, I believe I'll have IAC1B wire ready to be used as I don't have knock setup.
Just connect the 0-5V sensor back in?
Get a 5V connection (as from the TPS) and plug it to one of the pins in the sensor, and then the other one, will go back to IAC1B.
Is this it?
Thanks!

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
I have never used a single wire sensor (usually too noisy). Although single wire sensors can be used, see this thread as an example. http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64648
Look at section 3.4.9 for information on wiring your sensor into the MS2.
http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/html/MS2 ... e-3.4.html
You will need to build the conditioning circuit shown there to protect the ECU. You can not use the stepper motor outputs. You can only use JS4 or JS5, the spare analog inputs on MS2, for extra sensor inputs.

You're out of inputs..... time to upgrade. Either add a CAN based I/O extender or go MS3/3X or Pro

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
As I don't have Knock setup, it seems that i have JS4 (pin 27 in the ECU plug) available.
If that is correct, I can create that circuit on the proto area, and that should be it, right?
I a single wire sensor is bad, I'll look for the ones that are already used and calibrated for MS.
The Bosch one described in section 4 provided before, should do the trick, right? GM ones are not that easy to get in Portugal, and shipping from US is close to the price of the item (making the price double up).

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
If JS4 is indeed free, then yes, you can create that circuit in the proto area and it will work fine.

Re: Adding Oil temperature to MS2
Awesome. I'll have to check better how to connect the proto area to the pin I need afterwards. It was too long ago hehehe
As for the sensor, I'll see which are most commonly used other than the GM ones.
Thanks for the help guys.
