Microsquirt fw v3.83

Post by Lupac »

I am attempting to run a 1996 mazda 1.8L engine on a Microsquirt v3 ecu with firmware 3.83 installed. I have it mostly wired according to the easydocs guide, however I am having issues with finding information about configuration settings. A lot of guides refer to megasquirt ecus with older firmware and the menu options have changed in new firmwares or microsquirt is just different. Two things I need some help with are the CAS sensor and the ignition coils.

The Cas is a mitsubishi optical cas unit from a 1996 miata, I believe i have it installed correctly and its a matter of software settings.

http://www.rivercityroad.com/garage/cas.htm

I have wired SGT/Cam to VR2- with a 10kohm pull up (high but it's what I had) to 5vref, and SGC or crank wired to VR1- with a 1.2kohm pull-up to 5vref. ground on cas is going to chassis ground, and 12v in to cas goes to a fused 12v. The wires coming from the cas connection have no shielding on them from factory.

Here are screen shots of the ignition menus available to me and my current settings:

Setting menus I could not attach to this post.
Dual/Multi spark ignition menu:
'Dual/Multi Spark options' : falling cam sync with tach or wheel
'Auto Trigger Calculation' : Enable auto Trigger
'Offset (advance) for output #2 (degrees) : 0

Can anyone help me out with these settings?

I'm not sure if it is possible to run that engine on the B&G 3.83 firmware.

I would advice upgrading to the current MS2/Extra firmware as there are hundreds or thousands of successful "4G63" installs with it.

Thank you james, I downloaded the MSII extra v3.4.2 firmware and flashed the microsquirt.s19 file using the included application. the settings do make more sense now. I got the B&G microsquirt firmware from the easydocs page 'Embedded Code for Your MicroSquirt® Controller'. On this page it says the current release code for the microsquirt is the B&G v3.83.

I still have a question about my ignition coils. Can my Microsquirt directly drive the ignition coils from a 1996 1.8BP miata engine?

In my set up right now IGN 1 and IGN 2 are wired to individual bosch bip373 driver mod kits on external board which are then going to the coils. no spark out currently but I have not messed with the MSII Extra frimware yet.

I know 1990 - 1993 miatas ignition coils had the igniter module in the engine bay. I am not sure about the later 1994-1997 ignition coils (igniter in the ecu? or igniter in the coil?) and I am having a hard time finding info on that one.

I will add that when using Extra firmware, you should be using only the Extra manuals.

Other manuals may not be up to date and Extra firmware may use the ports differently. Especially the trigger capture.

MicroSquirt does not have ignition output finals built in you must use external high current switching, or smart coils.

this is my brain on MS
Correctly identify your MS ecu here
Read the Do's and Don'ts to avoid the common pitfalls before starting your install or asking for help
Use only these manuals other manuals may cause brain damage or worse.

94-05 Miatas all have "smart coils" i.e. built in ignitors

I've reuploaded my current tune and logs from my ignition. Crank looks okay but there is a problem with the cam

I removed the Boch BIP373 external circuit board I had wired in. The coils are now wired directly to ING 1, ING 2. There is also +12v and engine ground going to each coil.

I have similar issues to this post http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52307. After reading this post and comparing the logs to what is in my uploaded log, I think I have an issue with my cam sensor. Like how it was mention in that post, I also I had to set to 'rising edge' to get a RPM signal. In that post I believe the person solves it with an aftermarket wheel config which I would want to avoid.

Currently my vr1 and vr2 connections have 1.2kohm and 1.6kohm pull up resistors to the 5v ref pin. is this to much resistance?

all settings I've tried are from the following resources:
http://msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2-Extra_4g63.htm
http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64555

EDIT: I've also started by using the base profile located at http://www.megasquirtpnp.com/gen1/mspnp_downloads.htm

I've been trying to get the coils to work all day with no luck. There are only 3 wires and this is how they are wired. I am testing them using can test mode, injectors and fuel pump both work but no spark. I believe I fixed my CAS signal too so this is my last issue.

When using test mode to operate spark and probing microsquirt ing 1 & ing 2 outputs

ing1 is 1.6v and after starting test mode its .8v

ign2 is 3.96v and after starting test mode its 1.96v

did I damage the microsquirt?
