cannot emulate normal distributor signal

Post by jasaircraft »

Hi I got this Jimstim, did the tach test and led blinks fine

I now remove all jumpers and connect my jimstim to a MS2x and also a MS3x

I just wanted to check the ecu could see VR signals so I chose distributor on the jimstim (all dipswitches down) and primary tach jumper set on the two pins closest to the IAC2 led away from the pots (as this is supposedly VR emulation setup)

So I have all pots ccw and turn on jimstim, got good connection to ms2 and ms3x but wont get rpm signal by moving either the fine or coarse rpm pots (no pull up jumpers installed)

So I got myself a vr position sensor and remove the jimstim from the ms2x (not tested with ms3x)
I give earth and power to the ms2 and set software to basic trigger.
I connect both ends of the VR sensor to their respective pins and pass an iron piece erratically near the sensor and I do get rpm signals, of course they are all over the place.

I have ecu's pots all the way to the left on both ecus

I just wanted to test the ms3x with the jimstim and the 36-2-2-2 trigger pattern while its dismantled but had no luck (connected 2nd trigger to ms3x cam in of course when I tried it).

So what is wrong here, jimstim signal not strong enough?

You need to use the 12V jumper for the primary tach. Without it, you only have a grounding signal.

Hi Jean, but VR sensors normally dont get 12v right?

I just tried with a ms3x and it does see the vr sensor when i pass the metal near it...

The JimStim is not a VR sensor so it needs some way of sending a voltage to the MS if you want to emulate a VR sensor. That's why you need the jumper on the JimStim.

I just tried with the 36-2-2-2 trigger with the jimstim and both signals pull ups on 12v and it now captures rpm but its not steady...
I have done logs help please...
