1995 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 OHV

Post by masterflight »

1995 Cavalier
2.2 OHV 4 cylinder
5 speed manual transmission
True cold air box with K&N filter
4/2/1 OBX stainless header
2 1/2 exhaust
Flowmaster 40 muffler
Generic CatCon

MS3.57 with MS3x, both ready made.

DIYAutotune components:
-harnesses
-hall effect sensors for cam and toothed wheel
- 36-1 wheel
- GM sensors for MAT and CLT
- Innovate LC-1 wide band

Other components:
-stock 17# side feed injectors
-stock fuel pump
-LS2 truck coils
-cam sensor from modified oil pump drive (very similar to all GM small blocks)
-stock throttle body

Future MS3 mods:
GM CPS used for Vss, driven from CV Axle joint (has 3 lobes)
Cooling fan control via Fidle relay

Issues experienced and handle well by Matt at DIYAutotune:
-finding a good source for switched power
-wiring the fuel pump and ignition (together or separate)
-weird "latching" of switched power ( see http://www.automotiveforums.com/t966362 ... toff_.html )
-OOPS wired half of the IAC backwards.
- injector dead time was too short. ended up at 1.3ms
- accelerator pump setting wrong

Not experienced:
- lost synch problems (8 total in the first 100 miles

Wish List:
-that it was easier to find answers in the documentation
- that I hadn't sat on this for 2+ years out of fear the "smoke" would escape
- that Phil Toben would offer a "trial version" of the full suite of Tuner Studio. Maybe a one day pass for VE map? I think people would definitely buy it once they saw first hand what it will do. I had to think long and hard before spending any more money but TS is worth it.

This is FUN folks. Anyone with a similar project, I'm glad to share my maps and logs. Well, the forum says my log is too big and I don't have another one right now.

After 2 1/2 tanks of gas (probably 600-700 miles) I think I've got the fuel close to set. I've not touched the ignition settings as it seems to be producing slightly more power already, based on my 1/8 mile test section on a local road.

I'm having an aggravating loss of synch around 3200 and 3700 rpm at 60-100% throttle. I'll be searching the forum boards to see if I can find an answer.

Any volunteers?

Found the aggravating loss of synch!!

The o ring for the fuel inlet line to the injectors had a bad habit of "burping". A leak would be just enough to kill the engine but then recovered and refired.

Can you elaborate on the cam sensor from the oil pump? I have the same 95 motor without a cam sensor.
Also, was the factory crank sensor (7X) not usable? I’d like to avoid doing a trigger wheel if possible.
