1800 Zetec Mk 1 Fiesta

Post by duttnut »

Hi, I guess I should post here as I would class my efforts as a success story.

My car is a 1979 Fiesta 1300S, I have owned this car since I was 16 (am now 29) and I have had engines of different states of tune over the years.
Image
Originally a 1300 kent crossflow engine, I have now fitted a 1800 Zetec engine from a 90s Escort.
I have modified two Solex carburetors to act as throttle bodies, partly because of budget and partly for aesthetics.
I have machined replacement throttle barrels to blank off all the verturi holes etc, and tightened down any other bleed/idle screws.

The manifold was purchased and modified to take the escort injectors and fuel rail. These are mounted on the underside of the manifold/carbs.

I have used the escort TPS, O2 sensor, and air inlet sensor. A GM/megasquirt coolant sensor was supplied with the ExtraEFI ECU. It runs the Escort wasted spark coil pack directly driven form the ECU and the original Crank position sensor on the flywheel.
Image
I have a home made swirl pot and a high and low pressure pump system.

The ECU is a MS1 version.

I am very pleased with the whole setup, after years of modifying distributors and trying to tune carbs, I find the whole idea of tuning with the laptop fantastic. My throttle body setup not only looks more inkeeping with the age of the car, it sounds great, and I often get asked how it has been tuned so well as people don't know it has injection at all.

I also have a 1949 International KB truck and a Dutton kit car which are both ongoing projects, but both will include some type of megasquirt ECU in the final spec.

I joined this forum to find some help regarding starting/warm up issues and within a couple of days my problems were solved.
Thank you for supplying such useful help and information.

That's a nice setup "EFI incognito".
Car also looks great considering its age.

What did you use to get the fuel to the fuelrail.
What kind off fuelpump are you using is it insite the aluminiun cannister or are you using a vacuum fuelpump ?
Or an inline pump left bottom corner, could also be a filter.
Cant seem to figure out the part in the right bottom cornrer.
Is this the vacuum fuelpump or an pressure regulator ?

Cheers LAV,

This picture will give a better veiw,

The pump bottom right is a low pressure SU pump, this sucks up fuel from the tank and fills up the swirl pot via the upper side entry. ( it also sucks through the small in line filter you can see).
Once the swirl pot is full the fuel returns back to the tank from the top outlet, the idea being that any bubbles rise to the top in a swirling motion and exit to the tank.
The pump bottom left is a VW Golf/Polo pump off a factory injection car, i'm not sure what year. This takes fuel from the very bottom of the swirl pot ( where there is least likely to be and bubbles) from a large diameter hose. This pump is then connected, via hose and copper 5/16" pipe to another inline filter in the engine bay ( you can see this behind the right strut top in my previous post), and then directly to the fuel rail.
When the relief valve/pressure control valve on the fuel rail lifts, a return pipe (again copper and hose) brings fuel back to the swirlpot and enters via the lower side entry, this again adds to the swirling effect.
The two pumps run off the fuel relay, controled my the ECU, and always run together.

Of course I should only get bubbles if the fuel tank becomes low, or if I corner fast. It does have the added advantage of holing an extra few litres of fuel ( which is good when the tank on the Fiesta is so small) and when I get low on fuel, the low pressure pump runs faster, and so is a warning that I need to buy some more!

I eventually replaced the the SU pump with a faccet type pump like this

as the SU one was noisy,

I hope that answers your question :)

Wicked. I love a mk 1 festy but we never got them here in nz. Such a sweet idea to hide the injectors underneth. I remember a very clean mk1 at retro rides show few years back with twin carbs and de-loomed bay. Very nice bay.
