Custom Trike with multiple controllers and CAN Dash

Post by prof315 »

This entire project isn't quite done yet but my part of is close enough that it's time to call it success.

What it is: Custom trike with a 2005 Pontaic Sunfire powertrain.

What it's got: 2.2L Ecotec engine with the factory Ion sense ignition. Being controlled with an MS3-Pro.
Hydramatic 4T40E automatic transmission. Being controlled with a V3.0 Microsquirt running James' transmission firmware.
AIM MXL Strada Dash for driver info.

All 3 units are tied together on the CAN bus. I did have to remove R18 ( CAN bus terminating resistor) from from the uS. The uS gets RPM, ECT and TPS from the 3-Pro. The 3-Pro gets VSS from the uS and the AIM gets it's data from the 3-Pro.

Some notes of interest:

According to the factory service manual the alternator is PCM controlled. I set things up to have the 3-Pro do just that and used a 1K pull-up between the control and turn on wires so that I could..... And found that I didn't need to. The system charges at a very stable 14.2V just with the pull-up installed and alternator control turned off.

The Ion sense waste spark ignition works fine with the 3-Pro logic level spark drivers (going high) and standard dwell AND it provides a perfect cam signal for sequential fueling.

GM automatic transaxles have the VSS at wheel position not driveline position.

A 10K resistor is needed across VR+ and VR- on the 3-Pro to prevent sync loss above 2500 using the stock CKP and GM 7X decoder.

This is cool from the electronics side and everything you got it to do, but man alive that's the goofiest looking transportation device I have seen in a long time! Can't imagine investing the kind of money I'm sure that thing has in it!

Great Job getting everything working!

I have the same MXS strada. The vehicle speed is from ABS sensor, in tuner studio I can see the speed but in the dash no. In race studio appears MS3_SPPED1 (the ecu is ms3 pro ultimate) but I have not been able to see the speed in the dash.

How is the configuration of your dash?

Thanks!
