User Feedback/usability suggestions request

Post by djandruczyk »

For those of you who use megatunix (there's at least 2-3) I'm looking for feedback about What works, what sucks, and what's missing..

Things, like "I have a hell of a time finding the controls for xxxx", or "You should have done XXX instead of YYYY, as XXXX makes no sense..."

User feedback makes the software better, so if you are suffering, TELL ME so I can try ti improve it

David,

Im new to all this, but stumbled across megatunix, so you are getting a response from a real layman here!

Up to yet Im loving it, the trigger wheel decoding may be helping me, but thats another thread!

One thing that I really cant seem to do is produce a gauge that works in °c rather than °f.

Im not so keen on its offline mode, and if you turn off the ignition when running on the vehicle the warning page pops up - where megatune just stays active but obviously disconnected. Unless Im missing something.

But to this layman, it seems more "together" than megatune, I will report further once my MSnS is working, rather than using all software as a diagnosis tool. But I must say well done up to yet.

The comms warning will go away when the conection comes back... IF you try to close it it'll come back up as it's trying to re-establish a connection as megatunix has no idea that you turned the car off... Jsut close megatunix normally and there's no harm done.

Change the temp units to Celsius in the general tab and the gauges will read in degC. If the gauge doesn't have the span that you need, load it up with gaugedesigner, and alter it's range (general attributes) and alter it's lower and upper limits and adjust the ticks if needed.. The gaugedesigner should be fairly intuitive,, and if you edit a "stock" gauge and save it ,even with the same name, the dash will use YOUR gauge over the distributed gauges so you can override the defaults.

For the next release I'll try to design some gauges scaled for celsius units..

The documentation that I wrote is the source docs and web pages at:
http://megatunix.sourceforge.net
http://megatunix.sourceforge.net/screenshots/index.php
http://megatunix.sourceforge.net/doxygen/html/

And the docs created by Phil Ringwood (more specific to MSnS-E)
http://www.msextra.com/manuals/MS_Extra ... ex_MTX.htm

There are README files in each of megatunix's subdirs (well most of them) that explain how it works and the formats of the files for customization/expansion.

Auto-tune is planned eventually as I have several algorithms in mind....

Dash designer.. I have some of my gauges overlapping. I get the overlap the way I want. Save and re-open and they aren't overlapping properly because of the order the gauges are loaded out of the XML file. Need a way to set the layering priority or something. I used a text editor to manually move two of my gauges down after the ones they needed to overlap.

- Changing values in IDLE it goes where it wants, when i put Degrees in celsius and I give it enter, it insertts what he wants.
- VE Table generator
- Shift and multiply tables.
- Scalable gauges, but I read that they will be in .12 version :)

But, it's EXCELLENT, Congratulations!.

Layering isn't possible without a LOT of ugly additions.. I don't currently have the time to workout a layering hierarchy system, as i need to work on the core redesign for MSII.

Your best bet is to setup dashes so they don't have overlap into areas of interest, as how the render is not guaranteed.

I don't understand your first bit about IDLE.
table multiply already exists. (you need to hold shift and click in the cells to select them, then you can scale as needed.

multipel scaling existsm, either reqfuel rescale which rescales the entire table to suitthe new value. (useful to get reqfuel to something more manageable), and individual group rescaling using the shift/click method of selection and entering in a percentage scaler.

So it's in the works. Excellent. I was going to list MSIIextra as a needed functionality request. It it only going to be supporting MSII releases or will beta's and maybe alpha's get in their with a ini pharser or something like that?

not likely to do aphas or betas. the msextra people really couldn't care less about megatunix so they want no part about doing tab layout and design. Megatune does what they want and they see no value in changing. (It's great for devs, but I think it is rough on the user. (i.e. megatune's default MS-II setup is not too intuitive, esp for joe-newbie)

As for an MT INI parser. If someone wants to work that out and submit it, be my guest. I like the idea for the rapid development aspect, the probelm is getting it to look good, is well, difficult, as well as handling the myriad mess of ifdefs in megatune's ini's

How about a stripped down version.. Remove virtually all of the tuning from it. What I'm thinking is I have this great OLD laptop that couldn't even begin to run Megatunix. But, it'd make a great gauge viewer. I'm working on mounting a relatively small LCD in my dash, and I'd like to just run the gauges on it.

I don't use it as thoroughly as most do, but from what I use, it's working just well for me, avd all the updates make it even better. I don't have any suggestions or complaints at the moment.

u can get that already

copy out an interrogation profile to your personal dir (C:\program files\megatunix\.megatunix\interrogator\profiles on winblows, or ~\.MegaTunix\Interrogator\Profiles on unix OS's) and remove ALL the tabconfs out of it and it'll hardly use any memory and give you a dash..

Empty out the LoadTabs and TabConfs lines in the profile to lighten" megatunix. NOTE you won't be able to tune anything in this state...

1: ability for gauge needle to sweep in reverse (anti clockwise)
2: be able to use .jpg / .gif / .bmp as gauge background colour / image.
3: probably not possible, but variable sweep. If you look closely at many factory speedo gauges, you will notice that 0-40km/h is fairly big compared to 160-200km/h. I want 0-5000rpm to be fairly bunched up / close, but 5000-12,000rpm to be alot bigger. Think motorbike tacho. Most dont even let the clutch our lower than 4000rpm.
4: is it possible to add gradient / shadow or something to the needle to give it more 3d look ?
5: linked gauge warnings. Example would be a shift light. Set a alert to say, 7000rpm as you shift point. Instead of having a ring flash on the gauge, be able to offset it on X and Y so it sets up and to the right, like an autometer gauge. But have the warning in its own little guage housing.
The original tacho, can you program it so when the alert will go off, instead of choosing a colour, you choose a value, say "SHIFT". On a whole new gauge you set a warning on there, instead of saying "alert at 7000rpm" you can choose "alert at "SHIFT" ". Id then have a seperate shift light gauge :)

Other than that, im quiet happy with everything. Someone already commented about gauge overlap, ill try the edit trick and see if it works.

1 Autofuel! :)
2 Choose multiple cells in VE-table and Ignition-table for simultaneous increase and decrease.
(Select a square area or mabey separate cells, like Hold Ctr button and select X cells to work with ... )
