looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
In order to branch out into other devices, I'm looking for either a donation, extended loan, or cheap price on an ipod, iphone or ipad. I figure the ipod touch is the most readily available and cheapest. Anyone got a an old or previous gen model they would consider donating or offering on extended loan/sale for cheap to benefit the MS community and MtX family of tools?
Feel free to PM me if you have one, and the terms you're offering..
Thanks!
Hope everyone's enjoying MtX's latest release which is 0.9.22 (see signature below for links to it)

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
I have a 2G iPhone I would be willing to part with. It'll be limitted to iOS 3.1.2, can't be upgraded to iOS 4.. But aside from Multitasking, the functionality is really all but the same.

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
It arrived. There was a delay due to the postman being a bit of an idiot, but i got it eventually. It seems to work OK, need to figure my way around it. (never jumped on the iPhone bandwagon). Am a little concerned that i may not be able to reset it to factory defaults ( in case i would ever need to) as the docs i've found say it's not possible to do without a (original) sim card.

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
I reset it to essentially factory defaults before shipping it. It's not registered to any PC right now. True factory defaults means it's not activated, which is part of the unlocking process that I did on it before I shipped it. As far as the OS on the device is concerned, it IS set to defaults now. There is a bit of a learning curve to the hacking side of the iPhone.. The rest of it was designed to be used by grandma.. ;)

How about an Android Device? I would be willing to send you a 7" android tablet for development as long as I could get it back with a working program. I want to run such a device as a dash on my current track car project.
Android already has an open source operating system. I am trying to port over my current datalogger software and dash display into the Eclipse compiler.
My existing setup has MS, a GPS, an accelerometer, display and SD card capabilities on a single PCB. Works great to provide speed, location, and engine runtime parameters. The limitation is a character display. I would love to have a graphic interface.

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
as a side note, all tablets and ipads/ipods have an accelerometer, aditional data could be captured in a log like G forces, acceleration times from 0 to 100m or 402m, 0 to 100km/h times, and eventually WHP so you can compare old setups with new ones

I don't have one yet. My GF got an android phone (HTC thunderbolt), but she won't let me use it for software development/testing yet. B-day's coming real soon now, maybe I'll get lucky...

strictly speaking, you don't *need* an android for software development. the SDK comes with a pretty robust emulator.

Yes you do if you want to talk to EXTERNAL DEVICES. i.e you can't do bluetooth through the emu, and I'm not sure about serial or USBhassmaschine wrote:strictly speaking, you don't *need* an android for software development. the SDK comes with a pretty robust emulator.

I did a little, but then got blocked due to apple making it next to impossible to use any external devices with it unless either "approved by apple (big money, lots of time) or if it's WIFI, and so far I haven't located an affordable wifi/rs232 ready made device. I could make it work with a hacker board, but it requires jailbreaking the end user's phone and I don't know how many people are willing to do that.

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
These are getting more affordable all the time, as this latest revision is $20 cheaper than the one I have, and better too. Obviously, if you buy in quantity, they drop in price again.djandruczyk wrote:and so far I haven't located an affordable wifi/rs232 ready made device....
You can also get this, which I have, but other things are in the way, so it's parked at the moment.
It is also worth mentioning that they are "dashboard" & GPS based apps out there that interpret CAN OBDII signals, so using an ODBII plug and a CAN to CAN "protocol shifter" it might be possible to create a solution this way.
PS I have the serial breakout boards too, but I was waiting to see how the telescope driver developed.

Problem with CAN to CAN stuff, is that Megasquirt's CAN implementaiton is NOT EVEN CLOSE to industry standard CANbus that as far as I could tell (someone correct me if I'm wrong). and most of the ELM/OBD protocolconverter devices have pretty abysmal polling/data rates as well too.
How many people will want to shell out $185 for a wifi->rs232 device to tune their MS car?

Re: looking for ipod touch, iphone or ipad
More than you might think. Especially given the epic awesomeness that could be a iPad dashboard.djandruczyk wrote:How many people will want to shell out $185 for a wifi->rs232 device to tune their MS car?
That first link 24c posted appears to have serial-802.11 adapters for $100.. I didn't check his other links, but there are cheaper options than even that in the Arduino community. It doesn't need to be RS232, simple TTL would be fine, the MS has a TTL to RS232 converter on it.. As I understand it, TTL is more reliable because the voltage swings are smaller.

The "low cost" one is jsut a SMT boardthat you need to wire up with additional components in order to make into somethign usable. The TTL one requires the user to hack apart his MS to wire that in, and no TTL isn't necessarily more reliable than RS232. RS232 pumps up the voltage to increase noise immunity over the cable length. Std TTL signals over that long of a wire would get corrupted, hence the need for RS232.
Maybe at the next paycheck I can swing the near $200 for the RS232-wifi self contained unit.
