Configuring Engine Data CAN Messages for Microsquirt

Configuring Engine Data CAN Messages for Microsquirt

Post by hell2950 »

Hello,

First post here and a new user of microsquirt and Tuner Studio! I am part of a University team building a formula 3 car for a competition. We are using a Microsquirt as our ECU and just recently got the motor running. I am in charge of building a telemetry system for the car and am using a device called the Racecapture Pro II to gather data about the car. This device can communicate via CAN and so I am trying to program the Microsquirt to send engine data.

Here is where I am running in to problems. Most of the tutorials online show that there is a menu called CAN bus/Testmodes that exists where you can just enable the broadcasting of engine data over the CAN bus. However, this menu does not exist in my project. I don't know why this is the case.

I found some documentation on configuring the CAN Outmsg online. The documentation can be found at the bottom of the page of this link. http://www.msgpio.com/manuals/mshift/cpt.html I loaded the example code to the Microsquirt and still got nothing. Could it be possible that the device I am using is only passively listening on the CAN bus and therefore because the second line of code says to wait for a request there is never any data transmitted? If this is the case what would I change that line to? Or is there another problem with this code?

Tunerstudio Version: 2.6.14
MicroSquirt Version: 3.83

Appreciate any help you can give me!

Take a look at this:
http://www.msextra.com/doc/pdf/Megasqui ... adcast.pdf
and download and install the latest MS2/Extra pre-3.4 code for the MS2/Extra Development sub-forum.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but is this a newer firmware version? I would think that the 3.83 would be the new one vs 3.4? Or is the firmware I'm using basically 3.0.83?

There are 2 different and independent firmware lines: the B&G code and the MS2/Extra code. Yours is from the B&G line and is much more limited and has a much smaller user base; it is also supported on the msefi forum. The one James mentions is the MS2/Extra firmware and it has many more options (including CAN broadcasting) and a much larger user base; this is also the firmware supported on this forum.

If you do go with the MS2/Extra firmware (which I recommend), you will need to only refer to the manuals linked here. Using the one for the B&G firmware will only lead to confusion and potential issues. And James pointed you to the latest version.
