No, it should be pretty straight forward... Something must be going wrong, I would like to figure it out.

Can you send me your TunerStudioLogFile.txt from your installation directory? By default:
C:\Program Files\EFIAnalytics\TunerStudioMS\

my email is p_tobin@yahoo.com

Thanks for the Log file.
When you say sometimes, how often?
Is there any particular condition that seems to make it happen more?

Now that is really weird. I need to be able to reproduce it so easy. :)

What if you uninstall it and install the latest installer? I don't think there is anything wrong with the latest auto updates, I just went through them again, but it will provide another clue as to whether it is a build problem or something got out of sync in auto update.

BTW, what OS? Windows I assume?

Have you noticed the hanging to be more or less under any particular conditions, like when online or offline? Do you have any detach network drives? Are you working from a thumb drive?

I see WinXP in your log file, so that is answered :)

Another Question ( I'm trying to figure this out! ), How long of a hang is it? A few seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, or indefinite?

Does it save and open in the end, or do you have to restart?

v0.982.3
The miniterminal almost works now. It returns a string for MS1/Extra for the commands "S" and "T" but often the reply is truncated something less than the complete string. Most often it is truncated to 24 characters.
I have set the data frames to 5 frames per second.
To duplicate this, just keep sending "T" or "S" to MS
I am running win XP pro, and a slow 500MHz PC. RS232, COM1, 9600Baud.

It would be helpful if sometime in the future there was a "Clear Text" button, and the "Close Port" button worked so I can run other RS232 software without closing TunerStudio.

The title bar is always correct with the version string.

woh, thanks. Truncated? I'll have to see what's up.
It isn't full working as it only works while you are online with a config right now. So it is really piggy backing the configurations comm manager. I still need to make it open the port directly if you are looking to communicate with something without a project open or on a port other than the one your project is working with.

Just out curiosity, what are you using the Mini-Term for? Just because, if it is used much, there seems like an opportunity for several improvements, especially on the input side. Like being able to type in several byte values, hit enter and have them all sent at once. Right now everything gets sent as the chars are typed. This would let you emulate what is being sent by the app.

and the "Close Port" button worked
This button is for if you have a port open directly, not piggy backing the current project. Now it could make the current project go off line to close the port in the piggy back condition, if you think that makes sense. You could do this currently from the file menu.

Also the Data rate won't effect anything here. It only throttles the OutputChannel reads, for all other read and writes including the Mini-Term, it happens as soon as it can.

Actually I'm just playing around on the bench trying to help you QA the app. No need to rush on any of the fixes.

I find it usefull to query MS as a learning experience or when changing the firmware. It is helpful to reinforce any understanding about what is going on. The ASCII, Hex, decimal selection is helpful. Actually I would discourage making it independent of the main app. Combining the connection dialog and the terminal would be my choice to reinforce that they are both for one application and not independent.

I don't see the need to make any changes in how it works. As works now is simple and is in keeping with what actually goes on.

Yes I would like to see a way to take the project completely off the COMM port. That allows the use of other applications such as Inovate and EasyTherm without shutting down the app. If it goes offline, there should be some sort of 'obvious' indication at the main page to indicate it. A big red box with the Word COMM crossed out or such.

I think I now know why it hangs. What version of java should I use. Because it is the java that is crashing.

Any Java 1.5 and greater should be fine. In your log I thought I saw you were running 1.6_07. I actually upgraded one of my machines to that to make sure sun didn't throw me a curve, but that really doesn't happen much.

Now if your laptop is on 1.4.... It could likely be having a problem. I am using some API's that don't exist there :( I used to try to support 1.4 and older, but they are just missing too many API's these days' especially with the XML parsing.

I just found this on both computers Tuner Studio was installed in 2 locations. 1 in Documents folder the other in Program Files folder. I just deleted the file in Documents folder now it works fine and I love it. Now on my desktop computer, it had a working install until I updated the software and the laptop had a fresh install. Why it installed it in 2 locations I don't know, but I hope this will help someone else.

Interesting!
The actual program files were in your documents folder?
By default it does create a folder called:
TunerStudioProject
in your My Documents folder. That is the default Project location. This fixes all the access rights and hidden file problems with OS's like Vista. If you browse to a different location, like back to the install dir\Projects folder, it will use that instead.

This was one of those decisions I sort of had to make. My Documents is more sensible and easier for new MS'ers, but for users used to MegaTune, they sort of need to unlearn :P

Ok I restored the default folder and deleted the folder in Program Files. Everything still works.
