Update failed

Post by Kurt A »

Hi Phil,
I am having problems updating TS. Opening my old version of TS I was told that the beta version has expired and to go to the EFI Analytics web site. TS then closed and opened up explorer. I went to your home page and downloaded v0.985.1 for windows and after installing the latest version I still get the same message. I thought that maybe the desktop icon may be linked to the old version so I went through the directory tree and started from the .exe file and still the same message occurs. Looking through the files in the directory I can see that several have modified dates of today. My desktop version updated with no issues at all. It is just my tuning laptop that I am having problems with.

Out of curiosity,,, What OS are you guys running.

I have found Vista to cause this when you upgrade using auto update. It appears to download everything finebut when you start the app it is still on the old version. What fixes it is if you set the icon to run as an Administrator before doing an auto update, but then it prompts you every time it starts...
I need to change this so it will run as a normal app, but request admin rights if it goes to update.

Phil, not sure what you mean by running the icon as an administrator. I have done several auto updates with this laptop before with no issues.

In Vista there is an option in the properties dialog to run as Administrator. You need to right click, open properties and select run as Administrator. This is Vista only though...

If you have been getting updates OK though, I doubt this is the trouble.

Try deleting the user.properties file from the install dir.

Phil,
There was 2 user.properties files. I deleted the oldest one. No Change. I tried deleting the newest file also with no change. TS will not open, just says "beta version has expired and to get a current version". TS also created a new user.properties file after trying to open TS.

How can there be 2 :?:
TS will create a new one after you start, that is why it is safe to delete it, you will just loose any application level preferences like window position.

I don't think you said for sure, but it sounds like you are on vista. Have you tried an uninstall, then installed the new version?

What is the file size and date of the TunerStudioMS.jar file. For some reason that doesn't seem to be getting replaced. With Auto Update what happens on vista... If you are not running the app as Administrator, it doesn't really write the new files to the install dir, it creates user specific ghost directories and puts things there. Then when you go to restart, it still starts from the real location with the old files.

I think what is going on here is the same sort of thing. That may be how you see 2 user.properties.

Phil I think the 2nd one was created after I went to the TS site and downloaded the latest version. I suspect that it was created when I did the new install over top of my original TS.

I am definatley running Win XP pro, no Vista. I have not tried to do an uninstall because we will not find the true source of the problem. I have no problem doing this if you wish to do so.

The "TunerStudioMS.jar" file is 874 kb in size and is dated 10/28/2008 6:47 PM. Do you have some file names that would be in these ghost directories? I could do a search on my laptop for the file names to see where they ended up.
I think what is going on here is the same sort of thing. That may be how you see 2 user.properties.
Curiosity is killing me Phil and I may be asking for an answer that I may never understand. Why would the auto update feature be fine for several updates and then chose to not work now? What caused it to say that my beta version had expired? I have been getting the updates on a regular basis and should have been updating from the last new version.
Kurt

Phil I just did a search on my laptop for the TunerSudioMS.jar file and came up with only the one file in the correct directory.

On XP... Ok, then it is something else. XP doesn't play that game.
I might need to see your TunerStudioLogFile.txt. Can you zip it and send it to p_tobin@yahoo.com

On Vista, go to the tunerstudio folder, right click, properties, security, edit, click on users, then tick the read/write boxes.

That way you won't have to run it as administrator :)

I had a similar problem with both MLV and TS on vista. Part way down this thread http://www.msextra.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 86&start=0

Phil,
Just thought that I would mention that this laptop did have Vista on it when it it was brand new, I think, There is a Vista sticker on the keyboard. The company that I work for converted it to XP Pro before I got it, not sure how they did it. Could there be some Vista reminants that may be creating problems?

Vista shouldn't be able to cause it if it is on XP now.

Have you been able to uninstall it yet? When I looked in your log it is still running 0.984 and that log doesn't show any failed update attempts. But it shows it running on 1/2 as version 0.984. I'm a bit lost still.

Phil I have not did an uninstall yet, been waiting to see if there is anything else you may need to help find out why it is happening to some of us. If you are lost then I am really lost, LOL, I will kill it tomorrow and start fresh.

Phil,
I had a chance to do the uninstall and reload. TS is now working again. IAT & CLT are reading way off, other than that all appears to be well. If I remember correctly the very first time I installed TS I also had this problem and we ended up adding files generated by Easy Therm. Both gauges are reading that temp is -40C temp should be reading ambient of +2C.

I'm still not sure what was going on there, but glad it is working now.

You will need the matFactor.inc and thermFactor.inc files from EasyTherm. If you put them in the project folders "inc" dir or projectCfg dir, they won't be lost with the app uninstall. Try not to replace the inc files under the app install dir as I might push changes to that folder and they will be over written.
