starting a new datalog without stopping the current one

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

starting a new datalog without stopping the current one

Post by evo828 »

While datalogging I sometimes just press CTRL+L to start a new datalog (to separate sessions while driving) - and then only press enter to confirm the file name of the new datalog. However - the new datalog is empty (only contains the header - but no data). Of course - when I normally stop the first one and then start the new one - everything is fine. Is it a bug or I am missing something. In MT - it is not necessary to STOP a log before I start a new one.

I hadn't considered starting a new log while already capturing one. So it likely wouldn't work. :(
That shouldn't be a hard change though, I'll see if I can get it in the next release.

So should stop stop them all, or should I see about maybe putting a stop for each active log?

I'm surprised you are getting a save as dialog on the second, that should be disabled while there is an active logging session.

I find it convenient in MT that starting a new datalog concludes the previous one.
In fact I use ALT-L, ESC to finish a datalog to save using the mouse.

I think that makes more sense.

I was doing the same in MT - Alt+L and then ESC (to stop the log) or Alt+L and then enter for the new log name - closed the first log session and started new one Still learning with TS - so I did not know whether I missed some setting etc.

I've used it this way too (highlighted part). For on road tuning and logging, it is quite handy! Helps to keep the logs down to manageable filesizes for ease of finding stuff you want to look at later instead of having different concerns all documented in one large log file. I'll have to try the trick in the non-highlighted part, as key strokes are preferable to me when bouncing down the road on my autocross suspension.

Does Megasquirt need to be connected when starting or stopping datalog? Recently when I was playing with some starting issues - I have got several "empty" logs - although I was stopping the log with CTRL-B. But sometimes I started the datalog before I started Megasquirt (and the engine) - or vice versa - stopped the engine and only then pressed CTRL-B.
What am I doing wrong?

You shouldn't have to be connected, but I had someone else report the same thing. I'll look into it. It is handy to start the datalog, then turn the key on to start the car :)
