Can we make it save MSQ's more agressively?

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Can we make it save MSQ's more agressively?

Post by UnaClocker »

I went to the dyno last week, and made some changes to my tune while there. When exitting TS, it didn't ask to save my MSQ.. Couple days later, I went back (new cams and such), and made some more changes. Again, it didn't ask to save my MSQ (it had earlier in the day when I did some road tuning with the new cams).. So now I can't go back and see the actual differences in my tune side by side.. Drat.. Seems TS's criteria for making a change in the tune and requesting a save are very weak.. I have a 160gb HD in this carputer, and I don't think there is such a thing as too many saved MSQ's.. They all line up nicely with the automatic time stamping. I'd almost like to have a toggle I can flip in the program that will make it auto-save the MSQ when I exit if there have been ANY changes made to it.. But really, the first problem is the important one for me.
I should be running the latest version, it hasn't asked me to auto update..
Thanks..

Currently the criteria for TunerStudio to prompt you for a save is.
If 1 or more bytes of the raw data has been altered since the last save.

I don't know how it could be more aggressive? If you have a scenario that it does not do this, see if you can come up with steps to reproduce it.

It is on my todo list to put in a diff feature, so you can compare your currently loaded settings to an msq. This is partially there if you trick it.
Load an msq without connecting, then connect to the controller. It will tell you if the loaded msq was different than what is on the controller and list all the parameters that don't match.

Heck yeah I have a scenario to reproduce it. Open TS, start the car, or start the car, Open TS.. Change the VE table. Shut down the car and Exit TS. It won't prompt to save. Heck, I changed the spark table as well at the dyno on Saturday. It didn't save afterwards. Usually I've restarted the car several times since the burn before I exit TS, maybe that's what's confusing it.. I'm running MS2E 2.1.0RC.. Seems to be a very repeatable problem. I have Camtasia installed on my carputer, I can record video of the problem, if you can't reproduce it.. I figured it was designed this loosely.. heh.. Good to know it's not supposed to work like this..
edit: Come to think of it, maybe this is what the difference is.. I normally leave TS running throughout the day, and the car has restarted a dozen times since my last change. Maybe it forgot that I made the change by the time I get around to exitting the program?

I'm just not seeing it...

I started TS
It connected to an MS2 Extra
I opened VE table 1
Changed 1 cell by 1
Close the VE Table.
Clicked the top right corner close

Got a prompt
"The Tune for xxxx has changed.
Would you like to save the changes?"

Wait, I just had a flash back from about 3 years ago with MLV....

I had to change the way I captured a close application event because if Mac users closed MLV by some way or another, that I think is common on a Mac, MLV never saw the close and didn't save the users settings. It might have even been you that reported that one :)

Are you running on a Mac? :D :D

No, it's Win7, but I've noticed that it doesn't log close events properly because I see javaw a hundred times in the task manager.. It's not actually closing. I had a problem with it not saving changes to my project file in the past.. (or not loading them, on reopening.. whichever..)
I can record a video of this...

Oh great another wacky OS to support.
That is it, from now on TunerStudio is only supported on Windows 3.11

If you have the javaw.exe process hanging, it is probably that it is not saving your settings.

My first guess is that it is going to show the prompt for you msq save and it is not making it... It may just be a bug in that beta or the beta JRE running on it :O, but I'm sure there is a work around.

This version of Win7 is not a beta, it's a release candidate. It's also publicly available. If you have something you can put it on (any machine suffering with Vista is going to LOVE Win7, it's soooo much faster! And really looks the same to me, though I only ran Vista for a couple days.. hahaha)
Here's a snip from the email MS sent me:
On Tuesday, May 5 (PST), the RC will be available to everyone via our Customer Preview Program. As with the Beta, the Windows 7 RC Customer Preview Program is a broad public program that offers the RC free to anyone who wants to download it. It will be available at least through June 30, 2009, with no limits on the number of downloads or product keys available.
And this is the link to get it
I had the typical UAC problems that Vista users have, when I first installed it. I simply disabled UAC completely. UAC = good for my grandmother/Bad for me. :)

I wouldn't be too concerned about trying to get Win7 support working until it actually launches. It may be RC but there are still a bunch of unfinished feature (of which correct Java implementation is one of them) and a list of bugs covering four side of A4.

I've been testing Win7 since it released on Tecnet (I'm a software Dev as well) but it's still not finished.

I'd put this latest bug down to Win7 - not TS.

Hmm, OS2... That brings back memories and would be easier to support than Win 3.11 :)

I am curious what is making it hang. I wonder if it is the dialog popping?
If you open, connect, don't change anything and exit. Do it exit the javaw process?

another possibility may be the comm driver hanging? Is there any difference in it hanging if you are not connecting verse connecting? How about if you never even open a project?

Hey. Is there a way to turn on any run as administrator in win 7? I just had another win 7 bug reported and I was wondering if it has to do with write access to the install dir. When you exit TS saves your user settings to the install dir and may be hanging over write issues.
