not Multi-User/Login friendly

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

not Multi-User/Login friendly

Post by Southcross »

:(

my laptop had been setup for a main login "adminsitrator", and now a secondary "MegaSquirt" login for just tuning purposes (non-admin)... since TunerStudio defaults to the path of the last project, but saves everything to the My Documents folder... it causes "Access Denied" Issues.. even if you move the files to another folder, permissions follow the folder (windows issue).

Suggestions on migration to a "public" set of projects, or maybe an option in TunerStudio to support Multi-User environments?

Supporting multi user is simple enough. I have actually switched that back and forth a couple times.... For multiuser I just start saving the user.properties file to your home dir instead of the application dir. So then the last projects and what not are specific to that user. Why I switched back is, it has a side effect. Then all installations logged in as you will have the same settings, but I don't want to use the same setting in my development version as I use against my real car. Same thing with MLV, I usually use a different installation for user support than to tune my car.

So I switched back to this and know one seemed to mind, but I guess someone does now :). Besides it really shouldn't save to the install dir anyway. Normal users on Linux and what not do not have write access to where apps are installed so people are forced to put the install in their home if they want it to work right.

I'm sure I can come up with something that works for both.

I setup a basic user account for tuning so anyone can sit at my laptop for tuning, but have no access to saved passwords/etc.

From the main login, I moved the TunerStudioProjects (sp?) folder to the root... ran into "permissions" issues when I opened the project on the the new account. So I made a new folder just slightly re-named... fixed permissions issue. Problem is TS continually wants to do everything out of the My Documents folder of user logged in. My solutions "works" for tuning, I just need to remember that it defaults to My Documents when I save a MSQ

Maybe add a universal "projects" path in the options with a "my documents" checkbox override (default)?

Actually, the default is
[MyDocuments]\TunerStudioProjects\

But that is only where it puts the projects by default. If you create a new project anywhere else on your drive, or open a project anywhere else. It remembers that and works from there, it will not look at the My Documents folder any more.
