How is Dwell reported?

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

How is Dwell reported?

Post by zmanco »

I had originally posted this on msefi.com but will try again here...

I was looking at the Dwell readings for a datalog and noticed that at 7k rpm the dwell is reading 4.00. Given I have a 6 cylinder, I don't think that's possible. The way I calculate it, each revolution takes 8.5 ms and there need to be 3 ignition events per revolution. Hence it's not possible for dwell to be 4 ms at that engine speed.

Perhaps the units for dwell are not ms? What am I missing?

In 1.0.2, 2.0.1, 2.1.0, 2.1.1 and most 3.0.x codes the dwell is the desired dwell in ms. In the very latest 3.0.3 alpha code I changed it so that dwell is reported after the "time available" calculation has been performed. So with that code (only) you would see the dwell reducing at the higher rpms.
