Thanks for the tips!
I can't find any information that it would be possible to change echo mode on these BT-modules.
But I think I found the other thread you mention ( viewtopic.php?f=122&t=50649&start=20 ) Looks like he gave up.
I will try to make the handshake mod and see if it helps..

Today I tested a HC-06 module on a Megasquirt3pro
The HC-06 is configured to 115200 baut, I also changed the name

I've done 3 different MS2 v3.0 bluetooth modifications, all were a success.

I can't get tunerstudio to communicate with the MS3pro by bluetooth.
With USB ( no bluetooth ) works fine.

Anybody who knows what to try or do ?

So I guess what I"m not clear on is if using an HC-05 or HC-06 on a backplane (when the're soldered to the surface of a board with the 4 pins sticking out and wiring it to the Tx and Rx pins on the CPU, there appears to be different information about what you need to do to make it work:
  • I belive one person said they had luck with just connecting it to the 2 pins + power and it worked without disconnecting it as long as they didn't have both the BT and cable connected at once
  • just disconnecting power to the BT module when it's not in use (not clear if this was with the internal serial uart chip disconnected)
  • just disconnecting the communications pins (not clear if this was with the internal serial uart chip disconnected)
  • swapping one for the other

So I'm wondering what the simplest way to do this is so that I can switch between the 2 quickly (at least without removing the MS from the car)? Can you just wire it in, not disconnect (wire a switch) anything? have to disconnect power or have to disconnect communications pins? Both? Or does the internal ttL to serial adapter have to be disconnected?

In my case I'm using MS2/PCB3

I soldered the HC-06 in my MS2 V3.0 and didn't make a disconnect option inbetween.
I mostly connect by bluetooth.
I can't remember if I tryed it with cable on the DB9, I think it will work fine, but have to check te be sure.

Well, I have an HC-06 coming early next week, I hope to get to test this during the week. I guess I need to pick through this and the other (rx7 forum) thread to figure out exactly where to connect the 4 pins to (on an MS2, PCB3, I'd preferably want to make all the connections on the PCB and none directly to the CPU), unless someone has made a clear pinout which I haven't seen.

I don't know. Had the hc05 and hc06 and the tunerstudio bluetooth adapter. The one i will keep for me will be the one of tunerstudio. Why? First of all installation/programmation manual......... You can switch between programming and normal use just with switch. (with the HC moduls i'm still not clear if you have to swap the pins while programming or not I just tried swapping the cables (RX/TX) until i had communication............

Second with both HC moduls i had transmition of a few meters (nothing trough walls window) wiht the one of tunerstudio i'm outside my house (approx 20m) and it still connects and has transmission

Then i tried to just cut the + voltage of the HC module. I'm not sure if this is a smart idea because you must connect it directly to RX/TX of the CPU..... With the one of Tunerstudio just leave the Bluetooth and cable plugged in. If you need a cable connection (for firmware upload) just unplug the Bluetooth and connect your laptop (No this time you are not directly on the RX/TX of the Processor, we are on the MAX232 chip (wich is way cheaper than a processor)

Then there is no configuration needed. And if the bluetooth device destroys something on the MS (be carefull because the HC moduls work with 3.3V (i know thy write untill 6 but this will be at yourn own risk) you will spend more to repair the whole stuff than buying the really expensive bluetoothadapter from Phil Tobin

The best option is to get a RS23 to TTL adapter like they use in Ardino projects (just make sure if you need the male or the female one) then you will need a 5v regulator (V+ vor the MAX232 chip) a 3.3V regulator (for the V+ hc modul)If you like some capacitors to clean theVin and Vout of the Regulators. And the HC modul itself. Then wire the Voltage regulators Vin to the DB9 connector pin9 (there is 12V supply i think on this pin). Then Ground to ground. And Then it is normally TX-->RX and RX-->TX.

I also bought a USB to ttl converter So you can connect the HC modul directly to your USB port or your computer to set it up!!!!!!!¨And one you have all led's lit up (the Converters and the HC modul is powered) you can get in GOOGLE PLAY a bluetooth Terminal programm and a terminal programm for WIndows (i use H-term).........

Then pair the devices connect in HTerm to a COMport and start to send and recieve over bluetooth. If you have the right COM port you schould be able to send and recieve Data form/to Cellphone to/from Computer. Here the things are starting to be a little complicated because the bluetooth serial connection is split in outgoing and incoming i think ( so if you connect a bluetooth adapter there could appera 2 new COM ports. One for sending and one recieving)

And finally open Tunerstudio go to Communication one of the COM port's related to the bluetooth you use. I didn't try the Connect button because Tunerstudio crashed everytime. So i chose the right com port and ta taaaaaaaaaaaaaa.......... Was transmitting data.........

And Yes The HC05 worked with MS3 (once you have a connection). But when it came to burn data i had sometimes warnings like invalid bytes or corrupted pages!!!!!
Then i would recommend the 06 Module if i had to choose between them. for me it was easyer to setup

So make yourself and your wallet a favour and get the one from Tunerstudio...............

If you are going to use an HC-06 I would use on of these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arduino-DB9-RS2 ... 48592c3601
Has a DB-9 on each. One end you plug into PC to program. It should come on in AT command mode without any jumper.
The other end plugs into MS com port and away you go. Digi-Key sells a cover that fits these perfectly. http://www.digikey.com/product-search/e ... &x=18&y=14
If you mess with Arduino's there is a sketch to program these, just search the Arduino forums for HC-06 and you can find it.

I got one of the packages from the ebay seller that a bunch in this thread and the other thread mentioned:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160701028772?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
Don't waste your time with this guy, I'll explain at the end.

I also picked up one with the DB9 on both ends- that was a piece of cake. I plugged it in using the 4 pin header and a usb to TLL adapter and it programmed fine, then just for good measure I tried it with the USB to Serial (RS232 DB9) adapter that I used to program the MS in the car and applied external power. Both worked fine. I made some modifications to the board to apply power (will write up soon), plugged it in, tweaked things a little and had it running:
https://youtu.be/KDg5spgCZ3I

This thing is great... I love the wireless, have played with it with the laptop and my S5. I love getting rid of some of my tangle of chords. The range is more dependent on what you're connecting to it as a master, with it sitting like that on the passenger floor I can pretty much stay connected to it from anyplace in the car or driveway with the laptop. I can actually go inside my front door with my S5. They both connect reasonably quickly, but Tuner Studio takes a while to figure out when the connection is dropped, not a big issue.

I still need to figure out where to connect on the MS if I want to bypass the DB9, but now that I know that I can make the HC06's work I plan on using the smaller board and just cut a slot in the side of the case and stick the antenna out.

So what's the problem with that seller/package? Well, the only reason to go with him is that he's selling a package that is supposedly pre-programmed so in theory you should be able to wire it up and go... WELL, IT'S NOT. What I got:
  • it took him 5 days to send the detailed instructions... and they're crap, like nothing useful
  • the USB adapter that comes in the setup won't connect in windows- I ended up doing a little digging and found that the error I'm getting is either the result of a counterfeit or discontinued (years ago, driver support was dropped 2 years ago) chip on the board. He argued with me about it for 2 days till I sent a screen shot showing it, then he just focused on other things.
  • it is NOT CONFIGURED as listed in the ad at all. It has factory CH06 settings in it (as far as I'm concerned, this is the only reason to pay him the extra $, and that wasn't even done), he doesn't even seem to care about this, the only answer I've gotten about it is that "we have to pay extra to stock them here in the US" (not sure what that even has to do with why he didn't provide what he advertised, and I find it a bit funny that the username he sends this all from has Chinese characters in it)
  • the serial TLL connection is cranky. It works at 9600 baud but when you set it to 115200 it still responds to commands but the replies you get back in the terminal window turn into gibberish- sometimes they're OK, sometimes one or 2 characters are messed up, sometimes they're complete gibberish - I think I figured out what's wrong with it but at this point I don't really care, it doesn't work correctly
  • it doesn't broadcast it's bluetooth connection. I've tried to pair to it with 2 laptops, a desktop with a dongle in it and my phone. none of them even see a bluetooth connection to pair to.

So far I haven't managed to get any kind of useful response from him... will update if I do

Freek corsa- do you have/can you post any pictures/information how you made your internal connections... I need to spend some time digging through this thread and some of the online documention but if you have this it would save me _a lot_ of time.

Well, actually I've figured out were the Rx and Tx connections need to go, but is there somewhere to pick up a 3.xVDC source? I can get 5VDC and Ground near the proto area but I was wondering if there was something 3-4VDC already on the PCB3.

Now i tried some more with my rs232 db9 hc06 unit. I even ordered Another one to make sure it wasn't defective.

+5v supplied through pin 9 on my MS1 v2,2 if i connect the configured bt module and send "s" from terminal the MS box replies MS/MS/MS/MS... for eternity..
If I connect the female db9 on the bt module to the computers com-port at the same time as the male db9 is connected to the MS box and send "s" from terminal i replies correct with the firmware version (hires 11d). I tried both this ways with 029y4, hires 10 and hires 11d with same results.

I also tried a loopback test connecting the computers com-port to the female db9 on the bt-module and my Android phone to the Bluetooth suppling external Power to the bt module. Then I can "talk" between the two devices using terminal programs, without any echo / loopback behaviour. Then I crossed the rx/tx pins using a gender changer and connected the computer com-port to the male db9 on the bt-module and phone connected through Bluetooth that way also worked "talking" between the units without echo / loopback.

Any ideas what I should try next?

Hi All. I've been busy and placed a HC-06 permanently inside my MS3 with external antenna (aerial). I've written about it in my blog if you want to check it out.:RTFM: Thanks to all here for your information, it has helped to get this going for me.

Cheers,

See my post (above). On my blog I show how I created a simple resistor divider (voltage divider) that fixes this issue.

Can't seem to get my linvor to stay connected for more than 30seconds or so on my dell venue tablet or acer aspire V both 64bit windows 8. However they do initally say connected when I pair. Tried switching the rx and tx but doesn't seem to change things. Just hoping someone knows something I might not.

I was last seeking help with my bt setup on page 7-8 I think and had it wired up in there nice but just reduced to tuning via wire since couldn't quite get it working and unplugged bt since both wouldn't work. I know have a switch on the power, so everything should be good as this is the same as the guy helping me those pages back. I have a diypnp which uses a microsquirt board. One more pic from todays attempts, what should be done here to connect?

thanks for all the help guys.

I know it's a long shot, but make sure that all devices eg tablet android smartphone are disconnected from Bluetooth except the device you wish to connect. I speak from experience as my pc showed that I was paired with the MS but wouldn't connect until I found that both my tablet and phone were connected.

Jim

Edit: Matt just press detect, it may take a while whilst it checks all your serial ports for a megasquirt signature. :) :)

Finally got around to updating my Blog with updated info re my HC-06 installation. It includes a switch now, so you can switch out the BT module when using the USB to load firmware etc. Also a BT status LED.
