Temp project

Temp project

Post by racingmini_mtl »

Phil,

I hadn't tried that for a while now but it seems that it's no longer possible to change the COM port used with a temporary project (opened by double clicking on an msq). That is a major problem because it is very unlikely that I will be using the same COM port as someone who uploaded an msq to the forum. So I can't upload the msq to the MS and try it. This is with V2.5.17.

Or am I missing something?

Coms are disabled with Temp Projects.
Temp Projects are for viewing downloaded msq's, it isn't intended to be used for talking to a controller.

That's new. So to try an msq now we need to create a project? That's a pain.

That is actually the way it has been since version 1.x.

However the main reason was that the msq alone did not have all the project settings in them and there were many MegaTune msq's still floating around. This made it too easy for someone to connect to a controller without the project settings set properly and screw up their settings. Modern msq files do have everything to accurately recreate the project, so it should be feasible to allow communication. I would just want to do some more analysis to insure the non-standard scenarios are covered.

That is very strange because I don't remember having to use a project to load an msq to an MS (or other devices). And I always use temporary projects to look at msqs from the forum (except that lately I've been reviewing archived projects since I'm more likely to check CAN devices which are, of course, not temporary projects).

In any case, there is another issue with the temporary projects in that when you try to load the same msq using a temporary project, TS says it can't create a project because the project already exists. It doesn't overwrite the last temporary project if the msq has the same name.

Using a temp project is fine for viewing MSQs, but if you actually want to test it on a live Megasquirt then you've already had to load in the matching firmware, so why not use a normal (non-temp) project also ?

My sequence would be: click on a link in a post and open a temp project to check the msq; see that there is more than can be seen only from the msq and I want to check it live; load the firmware if needed; select the COM port in the open temp project and connect.

That last part is not possible. And since I did not download the msq, it is in a Windows temp directory hidden somewhere so I need to download and save it and create a project.
