Tunerstudio will not detect megasquirt

Hello, I am new to megasquirt and just assembled my first unit. I have been able to load the firmware, connect to my desktop computer running Vista, and use the simulator to check the functions. Problem I am having is with my laptop which is a chromebook. I loaded Ubuntu 12.04 and after several attempts and hair pulling, I have Tunerstudio and megalogviewer up and running. Now my last hurdle is getting the laptop to recognize the megasquirt. I am using a Sabrent usb adapter prolific R232, I have run lsusb and my laptop recognizes the usb adapter. When I hook up to the megasquirt, I hit start a new project and click detect firmware, and nothing is detected. I have loaded default values in and got to the screen with gauges, and shows not connected. I tried settings, changed baud rate yet nothing. Any ideas before I buy a laptop with windows?

Have you added your user to the uucp group?

No, I have not. I don't have a clue about what you are describing, what do I need to do?

on debian based distros, there is a user group uucp. Users in that group are allowed access to the serial port lock files.

Try this command in a terminal:
sudo usermod -a -G uucp yourUserName

Is it possible for TunerStudio to detect this problem and prompt the user with that required information? It is a pretty obscure problem otherwise.
