Tuner Studio will not open dash board.

Tuner Studio will not open dash board.

Post by Samuel Powell »

This has been working for years. When last I did tuning, last week, it was working fine. When double clicking on the desk top icon it will open the welcome screen with EFI Analytics on the screen and a few buttons up top. I can open preferences, and file selections, but when I click on dash board, nothing happens. This is version 2.0.6

I have a working copy of the program plus the install. exe on my desktop, so I copied the install.exe to my laptop and ran it again. Now I have two icons on my desk top that both fail to open beyond the opening screen. Did the install simply leave the old program on? Do I need to uninstall first, and then reinstall.? Do you think I inadvertently selected an option somewhere that is causing this problem? If so, how do I get back?

When I last tuned I had turned off the O2 sensor to autotune, and it is still turned off, although it runs fine with rather lean AF ratios in the cruise range. At light cruise it is driving down the road at 15.8- 16.5:1 or so. Let off the throttle and it goes into overun cutoff as it should. Until I get this worked out, I can do no more tuning.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Do you have Windows 8 , JRE 32 bits and JRE 64 bits?

Thanks for that link. It certainly sounds similar, but I have an ancient old laptop with XP on it, and have not changed anything since it last worked. The sudden freeze is a bit of a mystery at this point. Can you give me some guidance about where the 64 JLE file is located> Would it be easier to simply upgrade Tuner Studio to the newest version at this point? The car, which is a Dodge Dart powered by a slant six runs fine. I recently replaced the leaking exhaust flange gaskets and was going to do auto tune to repair what I thought would be errors introduced to the fueling table while tuning with leaks in the exhaust ahead of the wide band O2 sensor. This is an old installation that I have had running for about 5 years on MS I and another 5 on MS II. 3.57.

It has been recommended by several, including Matt, here on the forum that I upgrade to later firmware and later Tuner Studio versions, but it is old, and quite stable, so kind of hate to mess with anything if it is working. Well, tuner studio is not working now, so maybe this is the time. The computer end of this in NOT my strength.
.

Thanks again. Sam

The addage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does indeed apply to the Megasquirt install. As you have a running install, there is no particular need to change it around.

At this point, it sounds like something is broken with TunerStudio, so that needs fixing. However, I would strongly advise that you leave the firmware and tune alone until you have the new TunerStudio install working stably.

This is version 2.0.6
It sounds like you didn't open a project. 2.5+ opens to a screen that helps direct you to open a project, in older versions like your 2.0.6 you open to an empty splash screen until you open a project.

Start out by Creating a new Project from the File Menu.

Thanks all. Have been away from this for a few days with work. I appreciate the advice, which I will take to heart and follow. I have gotten advice on downloading the later TS version, and will do that fairly soon. If I understand it, once the new version is downloaded, I will have to open a project before the dash board will come up. That is good to know. It does seem odd that the current version quit working so suddenly. In the past, it always came up connected to the ECU without doing any selections of any kind. I will try that on this current TS and see if anything happens. I also have the old Mega Tune on the same lap top. Will that open and allow me to tune? I used that on my MS I, which was replaced about 5 years ago with MS II.

In 2.0.8 and older, after installing TS, you always have to open a project. Then TS would automatically open that project each time you opened TS after that.
So this happened from time to time, a user would install TS on a new computer and forget they ever opened a project as TS was always opening it automatically on their old computer.

That is the reason for the new layout that helps make it clear a project needs to be open before TS will look for an ECU.

I went to open a project in the opening screen, and you guys are right. The only problem is, the project for this car "Dart 230" is gone. I must have done something when I saved last that inadvertently deleted it. All the sample projects were there, and when I clicked on one of them, they opened. So the only thing I must do is save the current tune without somehow or other erasing it. This always scares me when doing computer things. I seldom understand the ramifications of the dialogue boxes that pop up. Can someone walk me through the steps of this? My guess is I will have to start a new Dart 230 file, open it up, and then the first box that will open will say"There are differences between ecu and current file" or some such thing. Help me out here please.
I am going to look on my flash drive and see if I have the Dart 230 project file saved there. If so, I can move it over back onto the lap top. Is it safe to assume that is should go into the MS Projects folder?
Thanks.

Thanks again. Brian had already emailed me on this before the new information came to light. This is Brian Holzbach? I will send him an update. My concern is being a dummy again and wiping the memory clean on the ecu. Somewhere there is a current tune file that should allow restoration if that happens. I have never been sure of how the files are managed. That is where they are in the directory, and how TS knows to go look for them. This is basic computer tech that I am way short on. In short, I am feeling a fix is not far off, or too far beyond my feeble abilities.

I have spent about two hours playing around with the laptop off line and here is the situation now:
1. I can find the project folder and all the 64 tune files that have been saved using Windows Explorer search engine. But when I try to look for it in the folders using Windows explorer, it does not show up. The path has somehow been truncated. The path according to the search is C\Documents and Settings\Sam\recent\tunerstudio porjects/Dart_230.The folder "recent" is nowhere to be found in the path.
2. Consequently Tuner Studio cannot find it either.

I was able to open the current tune briefly by dragging it from the search window into the projects folder. But after a few goes of this, it failed. At first it would ask me if I wanted to open a temp file, and when I clicked yes, it would open my file. Then after a few successful tries, it says it cannot find that file, even though I can see it in the windows explorer view.

So I am currently lost. I guess I will try to download a new, later version of tuner studio, but am unsure of making that work. I never now what choices to make with the inevitable dialogue boxes that open up. It seems I should delete all the current files on the laptop maybe, except the current tune file, or copy it onto a flash drive, but when I tried to delete a file from the windows explorer folder view, it responded that it could not find the file to delete it.

Maybe I should reload the operating system at this point. I am kind of at a loss here.

I know this is hard for you to figure out at a distance, listening to the babbling of a computer dummy. Any advice will be appreciated. Fortunately the car runs fine for now.

Or update to 2.6 that handles the changes Oracle made to the JRE.
