Realtime Graphing?

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Realtime Graphing?

Post by DJDevon3 »

I just got MS II v3.0 and have a question/suggestion about features in TunerStudio.

Having the ability to see gauges is nice and having a logger/viewer is good too. Being able to see a graph in real time is much more valuable as a diagnostic tool than only gauges or only an external log viewer (which plays recorded log files only). OBD-II laptop programs such as autoenguinity for example display and graph PID data in real time. As a DIY mechanic that's the best kind of diagnostic tool you could ask for.

Honestly, I don't care at all for the gauges. I would rather have a purely data view and real time graph. I'm just a data and diagnostics kind of guy. Just curious if this is perhaps an idea that's on the table, on the back burner, or can't/won't be done?

To be honest when I was checking out information on MegaSquirt I assumed that type of feature is what I was seeing when looking at promotional images of the log viewer. I thought the images were of a real time graphing part of the software. Perhaps that's my own fault for being so used to watching youtube videos of guys using autoenguinity laptop scan tools and picoscopes. Only until after I got the stimulator working and created a log did I find out it's only an external log viewer. Not that there is anything wrong with that it's just not as powerful of a diagnostic tool as a real time graph. Thanks for hearing me out and hope to eventually see that feature added to take MS to the next level.

or since I'm new here perhaps there is actually a feature in there for it and I simply haven't figured out how to turn it on yet?

You can setup a gauge as histogramm, which is a real time graph?

Guess that was a poor job of explaining what autoenginuity's diagnostic capability is. Here's a good example.

Basically it's a Megalogger view but in real time. That's how technicians actually use scan tools to diagnose issues. Yes we have that capability but you have to record, then export to low viewer and then watch it, it's not in real time. Again I'm new so maybe there's a way to enable that kind of view in TunerStudio that I'm missing.

A couple points here...

You can trail a log file with MLV while it is being captured by TunerStudio. To do so start a data log in TunerStudio, then Open MLV and select:
File --> Trail Live File

In that mode MLV will continue to load the log as it is written.

Point 2 is a bit of a teaser for the upcoming TS.
This has an embedded Log Viewer that displays logs real time or loads logs.

Or this feature I like even more... The Tuning & Dyno Views. There is a GUI builder similar to the Dashboard designer, but You can add as many different Dashboards, Settings Panels, Tables or Curves as you want.

Yes! That's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to find. Only a tad inconvenient right now to have 2 separate programs. Hmm after looking I don't see any option for live trail in MegaLogViewer Lite 4.0.04 :( I'll assume I have to upgrade to the pro version to get that feature?

I only have the free lite version any idea if the live trail will be for free version (after integration)? Was planning on upgrading to pro in the future anyway. Thank you for the response and images.

Historically Graphing has been kept separate for a couple reasons, largely resources. TS was kept slim to run well on old slow laptops, this used to mean 90's built laptops. These days even if you have an 8 year old laptop, it still does have power.
However, the other reason is it isn't realistic to try to fit all analysis tools and features into the tuning app or you would create a confusing experience.

I only have the free lite version any idea if the live trail will be for free version
At this point there is no plans to have the embedded log viewer in the free version. We do need to eat here :)

Makes sense especially with the amount of data one might try to pull off from a bluetooth dongle using lower transfer speed than a cable (presumably). I haven't even purchased the harness to start this install but when I do for sure I'll upgrade to pro. I've been told I'll need the VE live tuner anyway which is only available in pro too.

Thank you for letting me know that MS does have the capability and progress is always being made in the software. Thank you, now I'm excited again.
THIS IS GOING BE AWESOME. Can't wait. :)

Oh I think you'll find this quite amusing after the whole topic I created for it lol. I was using a really old firmware version 2.0.1. Well I decided to go ahead and try to upgrade to 3.3.3 and what the hell a whole bunch of stuff changed in TunerStudio. Now I have options that weren't there before. Same exact TunerStudio as yesterday just a new firmware. Menu options that were not there. The best part is I almost cried tears of joy when I saw the real-time display option. It most definitely was not there in firmware 2.0.1. So if you have an old firmware on your unit then upgrade!!! If you're like omg why's he running such an old firmware? Again I just got the unit and the stim board, haven't even had it a week, it was a gift, and was running a really old firmware.

This is so cool. This is the view that I wanted. I LOVE the new features. Feels like I just got a massive free upgrade to a "semi-pro" version compared to the old firmware. This fan-f'ing-tastic!
