Updates STILL not working?!

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Updates STILL not working?!

Post by T3Bunny »

This has been a persistent problem for at least the last two years or so (I believe). When either automatically updating, or manually updating the old java.exe is not stopping like it should. (Windows 7 currently, but I think it was also happening in XP, won't swear on that.) I have to fire up task manager and stop the java process. And first it has to get switched to this quickly enough to be effective, THEN I have to pick the right process to stop. Otherwise it pops up "previous instance of TS running, bring to front, or ignore."

Am I the only one still having problems?

Phil, let me know in detail what I can do on my end to help sort this. Or if it is only me, how do I fix for good? Every update is becoming dreaded... I have another PC that hasn't been upgraded (if it even has TS on it lol, but if not then it is needed...) I can video it, or run a drag or whatnot.

The Mac is updating without a problem, this is only an issue on the PC platform(s).

I have that problem on my desktop (Windows 7) and netbook (XP) as well. I think it's 100% of the time so should be easy to reproduce :)

Just as another data point, I remember seeing this a few times a while ago (on a Windows 7 desktop) but I haven't had any issue with automatic updates for a long time.

I did finally pin point this problem about a month back, a shut down hook was causing a Thread hang on close if you had opened a project and connected.

It is only on some computers though, but I found one that did do it consistently.

However, seeing as how the problem is within the code running on your computer, even the next update can hang as it is the existing install that must exit.
If you do an update check an install the update before opening a project, it should work properly.

I just did an update from 2.6.14 to 2.6.18 on XP and same old problem. I assume that this pre-dates the fix?

I have TS set to always open the last project.

Not had a problem on two laptops and a desktop all running different versions on Win7. But here, you always have to quit TS and then 'run as administrator' to allow an update.

You shouldn't have had to do that in a long while. TS will restart itself and prompt you to run as Administrator. Or is that what you mean?

When it says update available (or whatever) I have to quit it, then run as administrator. It will then update, and I can use it. Point I was making is it's not possible to update it which it's 'in use' here. As I don't normally run it as administrator.
