Feature request: Save project
Phil,
When the project has CAN devices, would it be possible to add one more option when saving the tune (in addition to selecting the main controller or the CAN devices) so that the entire project is saved? I know that this can be done through the export archive menu but it seems to be complicated for almost all users. And the entire project is almost always needed when trying to troubleshoot issues involving CAN devices.
Thanks,
Jean

Re: Feature request: Save project
Hello Jean,
I will run this by Phil when he gets back in a couple of weeks but I am pretty sure that support was the main reason for the ability to archive the project, because like you
said when trouble shooting you end up needing the whole project.

Re: Feature request: Save project
Isn't there a problem that export/import isn't a available in the basic Tunerstudio version?

There was an issue in a previous version but 2.6.19 does not, I just double checked.

I'm not sure what sort of format you are looking for the project to be saved as?racingmini_mtl wrote:Phil,

What seems complicated with export project?
I would rather simplify what is already there than invent new options to confuse people further.

Re: Feature request: Save project
Actually, I was thinking of exactly the same format as the current tsproj file. The issue is that this is somewhat hidden and not intuitive. In my experience, most software use export and import for creating files in a standard format for use in other applications. And it is also called an archive here which is rarely the reason for this, as far as I know.
So a 'save project' option would be more intuitive and would fit better either as an added option in the current save window (add one more radio button to the ones now used to select the devices/controllers in the project) or at least in the same file menu.
It's not that it's that complicated but I have never had anyone volunteer a tsptoj file when asking for help with a project with a CAN device even if I had asked for the whole project. I have always had to explain at length how to get this. So people are not using and seeing this so changing it to something more intuitive might not be confusing. Of course, this is limited to my own experience and you may well have more.

Re: Feature request: Save project
Ok... Makes sense. It does also seem to me that the project archives are under used.
If simply renaming the function would help, I'm all for that.
Save Project seems it could cause confusion though, as you aren't really saving the project you are working on, TS normally takes care of that. It is really saving the project to a single file. Maybe "Save Project to File" and put it on the main menu?
I'm open to ideas.

I was thinking the same after my last post and I think that your suggestion is a good one. It certainly seems more obvious and intuitive to me. But sometimes other users have different views.LT401Vette wrote:Save Project seems it could cause confusion though, as you aren't really saving the project you are working on, TS normally takes care of that. Re: Feature request: Save project
Maybe "Save Project Snapshot"
Or with the theme of tune restore points, "Save Project Restore Point"

Re: Feature request: Save project
I'm not sure these are clearer than "Save Project to File".
One more thing I just thought of about the tsproj content. It might be a good thing to be able to not include all the restore points (as you already can for the datalogs). Those can add up to a sizable number of bytes.
