ShadowDash working on Android stereo head unit ?

ShadowDash working on Android stereo head unit ?

Post by preston »

I searched around and found fewer posts on this than I thought, and most of them seemed outdated.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has successfully run a shadow dash on a stereo double DIN head unit.
A lot of them claim to host Android apps, but it sounds like things are not so simple.

Obviously let us know exactly what unit you are using and if you are using the Bluetooth transmitter or what.

I have Shadow Dash running on a Road Veles cvve-180. It is a single din.
I have installed a custom ROM in order to gain Bluetooth functionality on the unit, and connect to the Megasquirt via the Bluetooth

Must be an Aussie thing I have never heard of that unit.
How in the world do you get any kind of decent display on a single DIN ?

I'm definitely in the market for a double DIN screen type unit but only if I can get shadow dash working on it,
otherwise I won't bother as I would have to rebuild my dashboard for double DIN.

I realize I could mount a tablet but the form factor is not as nice and since it would be running the stereo I really like to have a physical volume knob.

Short video I shot a few days ago showing the Road Veles and Shadow Dash/MS Droid:

Good stuff, thanks for the info.

I'm honestly quite flabbergasted there aren't more examples of people doing this on the forum. While I could certainly find that exact model to purchase, I'm looking for a double DIN and its also not a brand normally used here in the states, I would prefer to stick with one of the major brands I"m familiar with not to mention you had to install custom firmware.

Just concerned to spend $300-500 to experiment with since this is for my hot rod and I primarily want to run shadow dash more so than music or other apps. I know I could mount a tablet but would definitely prefer a head unit.

If you just want to run a dash, look at some of the stuff from 4D systems.

They have some pretty cool programmable OLED displays, that are not that expensive.

I'm not aware of a major brand that is doing an Android stereo.

There are others available, the biggest trap is Bluetooth support. Virtually all devices on the market advertise Bluetooth but for a lot of them it is limited to hands free phone connection. You need to be very careful that there is Bluetooth hardware available to Android.

2 Din would be better because they are more robust. A touch screen slid out single DIN screen can be breakable.
The Road Veles is quite a good unit though, it has everything built in, although the fact it has a functioning TV is not that useful because you can never get a signal, however the DVD player, ability to play music from the phone, the reverse camera, and the GPS receiver are good.

I didn't want the interior of the car blinged up, being able to keep the screen closed and use it as a normal radio is good. Since your question I have messed around with mine a bit more and got rid of the Russian home screen, and turned off some of the transition graphics so it is a bit faster and more touch responsive.

The file name is serg090909-car2014-sd-4g-full.img

There are a few versions of it, this is the November 2014 version. It came from user serg090909 on the Russian 4PDA site.

There is one later version I have not tried, that adds support for a USB sound device so you can get better sound from the Android section of the unit. There seemed to be some problem with being able to supply sufficient power to the USB sound device, was hard to know because it is all described in translated Russian, it sounds like a ball ache and isn't something I am going to use because the audio from both WinCE and Android is fine IMO

There are two micro SD slots behind the detachable face, one for music/movies used by WinCE, the other is available to Android. One feature of these ROMs is that are installed to a micro SD card, the image is written to the card using the "procedure", and the unit then boots Android from the card leaving the stock firmware in place, untouched, should anything go wrong.

It is not clear to me that this unit supports bluetooth from within Android. Even though it states it is "pure Android" the bluetooth specification reads like it only supports connection to a phone. None of the screen shots are displaying a bluetooth symbol

It looks like this one will have bluetooth available in Android:

It supports a Torque bluetooth device, so should have native bluetooth

Newbie here starting to run a MSPNP on a 98 MR2 in NZ.

On my wish list is setting up Shadow Dash to display on a double DIN screen located on HU. GPS would also be nice but not really necessary. Don't want to clutter up the dash and my space is limited. Also track the car so don't want tablets or phones flying all around the place. Don't need Bluetooth as have cable running directly from EMS.

Has anyone made any progress with using an Android HU to display MS gauges such as O2, boost, temps, etc?
Can't seem to access some links above with the exception of alibaba which have used before. Just not sure what I'm looking for so would something like this work using the USB rear connection?

Neither of those units run Android so won't do any interfacing with your Megasquirt.

Have a look at these guys, 2 din units:
http://xtrons.com/head-units/two-din.html

For a single DIN this looks like a better unit that the Road Veles that I have:

The HU's I listed say they run Android but but only be related to the Bluetooth from reading description. I'll do some more research as not ready to pull trigger yet. Might build a mount for my tablet although can't see where I would have room.
