Dying computer

Dying computer

Post by Locost_builder »

The old laptop I've been using for Tuner Studio appears to be on its last legs. It's not connecting to my MSII board in the car and Tuner Studio can't find tune files or restore points, even if I can find them with on the hard drive using a file search. I have another installation of Tuner Studio on my Surface tablet (running Windows 10), but haven't used it. I think I can transfer essential data files from the laptop by copying them to a USB drive and installing them on my tablet.
Is there a list somewhere of essential files that need to be copied and the folder structure that Tuner Studio needs to take over the tuning?
Thanks.

Essentially everything to do with your MegaSquirt is in the TunerStudio Project folder.

In TunerStudio help (Press F1) at the bottom of the left index there is a link to "Folder Structure"
That gives a break down of what files are when in your TunerStudio Project.

If you can still export a Project Archive, that will take what ever you need to have your whole project set up.

If not, see what data logs you can get in your project Datalogs dir.
Restore points, etc...
You may want to grab some of your dashboards in the dashboards dir.

But in the end, what is probably most important to you is the tune on your box...
All you need to to get that is connect with the new box, and TS will read that from there. So that is safe even if your old laptop is completely dead.

I still can't get my (early version) Surface Pro to talk to my ECU. I'm able to load the most recent .msq file from where I've saved it in my documents. The gauge panel and all the settings are there, but the "Not Connected" message displays when connected to the car with the ignition on, even though Windows emits its usual tones to indicate connection of a peripheral and the blue LED on my DIY Autotune serial/USB adapter illuminates when connected. I've checked and tested the port settings in Device Manager, and they look OK. I've heard that Surface Pros don't power their USB port, which may be an explanation.
I've run maintenance utilities on my laptop, and it seems to be running better with the exception of the touchpad buttons occasionally issuing double clicks when clicked once, so I may be able to continue to use it.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

In device Manager are you seeing a Com Port for the USB to serial adapter?

Wading around in Device Manager is both illuminating and confusing. There are lots of parameters.
"Ports (COM & LPT)" only shows up on the tablet's device list when the USB/Serial converter and cable are plugged in.
Opening the item on the list describes it as USB Serial Port(COM 5)
"General" tab lists the same
"Device Type" is Ports (COM & LPT)
"Manufacturer" is FTDI
"Location" is USB Serial Converter
"Settings" are 115200, 8, 0, 1, and no flow control
"Driver" is FTDI 2.12.16.0 03/19/2016 with LOTS of details
The last two "Events" are "Service Added" and "Installed"
I've been able to transfer my current tune file with all its settings intact from the laptop to the tablet, but still get the Off Line message when trying to connect to the ECU.
There must be some peculiarity of the Surface Pro's USB port. I can probably continue to limp along with the Sony Viao.

It should be able to detect it with the FTDI cable attached.

Does TunerStudio list anything when you click Detect?

Have you set the Port or D2XX device in Communication Settings?

I've finally disposed of or postponed enough other projects tom be able to get back to my Locost 7/Toyota 4 AGE/Megasquirt.
I've established communication between my Surface Pro and the Megasquirt ECU and transferred my current tune file into a "Project" folder, specifically MSII_BG_2.905_Example by copying it to and loading from a USB drive , from whence I've tried to "Load Tune".
When I do, I get a "Signatures do not match! Tune File Signature MSIIExtra comms340v2 Configuration Signature MSII 2.90500". If I "load it anyway", I get a "Review Audit" with 241 warnings.
I presume there are version differences between some of the elements of my system.
I'd like to transition from the old laptop to this newer machine, but not if I lose all my current settings.
I'm also confused about the difference between a "Project" and a "Tune".
Where to I go from here?
Thanks

It sounds like you are using a MS2Extra Project, but loading your Tune file from B&G Firmware.

The best thing to do is start top.
Create a new project, use Detect so TS can setup the right ini for your firmware.
As soon as you connect, TS will read all the settings from your MegaSquirt.
