Mutil-cell select in table editor

Post by elaw »

Okay I like a lot of the recent changes in TS but... am I the only one being driven nuts by the behavior of the table editor when multiple cells are selected? Specifically the fact the entire selected area of cells moves when you hit the arrow keys, vs. it switching back to a single cell being selected like before.

Is there any chance of:
1) Making this vs. the old behavior a user-configurable option
2) Making the <esc> key cancel the multiple selection (go back to a single cell selected) rather than closing the dialog*
3) Making the new behavior only happen when you hold a modifier key like shift or ctrl
or some combination of the above?

* This to me is the worst. Instinctively I expect <esc> to cancel the current operation, deselect any selected cells, or maybe "undo" the last or pending operation. But not close the dialog completely!

Interesting...

That was a suggestion from a user a while back here on the forum and that is a feature I hear appreciation among the most on. It is always risky to change the default behavior.

I agree there should be a single key to go back to 1 cell... Escape would seem like a natural key except that has always closed any settings dialog, probably a much riskier behavior to change at this point.

Perhaps if any non-directional and non-function key is pressed, drop to single select.

Or, maybe just add a checkbox under "preferences" to select the new or old behavior?

I think my bias comes from the fact I use Excel a lot, which behaves the way TS used to, meaning if you hit a directional key when multiple cells are selected, it goes back to single-cell-selection mode.

That is simple enough, but I am resistant to adding new preferences easily as there are so many already that new users get overwhelmed and lost.
Perhaps on the right click menu, but I'm still hoping for a non-preference solution.
