Is it possible to run TS off a USB on multiple PC's?

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Is it possible to run TS off a USB on multiple PC's?

Post by elpaulio »

Hi all,

I would, ideally, like to install TunerStudio onto a USB stick and run it from there so that I can do tuning tweaks on multiple PC's but keeping one set of files. Is this possible?

The main reason for this method is I would like to do some tweaks at work and I'm not allowed to install programs onto the work laptop.
My other half uses the laptop for uni through the day otherwise I would take that with me.

No biggy if it can't be done but just wanted to ask before I tried it and got frustrated lol.

You can run TS off a thumb drive.

Just copy the whole install folder to it and run the exe or double click the jar if the PC has it's own JRE.

However, you don't really need to do that. You can install TS normally on all the PC's then just open the TunerStudio Project from the thumb drive.

Or better yet, put your project on Dropbox, Google Drive or One Drive.

That is my usual system, My TunerStudioProjects folder is on Dropbox so my projects are automatically on all my PC's

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I get what you are saying and was going to do that with Dropbox but I find that a bit of a faff (probably because I don't really use Dropbox and don't know how best to use it) but also I have the issue of being unable to install on my work computer.

If I can install the USB stick (which is on my car keys) it means I will always have it with me and can play about anywhere there is a Windows PC.

Cheers

If you don't have access to install TS, just copy everything from the install folder to anywhere that you have write access. It will run fine like that. TS doesn't install files to anywhere else. The only thing you will be missing is the file associations, but you can make those on your own.

I have a registered version of TS. If this was done to transport between work and home would the registration fallow the USB if you register the program then move everything to the USB? Or would the Registration stay with the computer? Sorry to hijack, i was just curious when i read the rest of this thread how that might work.

Nope, the registration and user preferences are per computer. No matter where you run TunerStudio from, it will keep this info in:

i thought that would be the case so i tried it and now have a usb stick with ts and mlv on them which is really cool. But i think i have a problem, i though i could copy the temp project to the usb stick so i could open a tune without a specific project but i get 'unexpected error occured opening project' is there a solution for that?

Close all projects and open the MSQ. TunerStudio will sort it out for you.

No need to copy a Temp Project. TS will generate that on it's own.

It will create it in what ever directory the last project you opened was in. By default this is the TunerStudioProjects folder, but if you start opening your projects from the thumb drive, it will stat using that as your Projects folder.

yeah got it it has created a new temp project on the usb stick. one final thing it appears downloaded ecu .inc files are saved in the .efianalytics folder is there any way of having the ecu defs files on the usb stick and having ts look for them there so i can carry those around with me to?

There currently is no way to set where it caches downloaded ini files. They will always go to the .efiAnalytics dir.
