Reload MS2/Extra Firware with TunerStudio

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

Reload MS2/Extra Firware with TunerStudio

Post by derbybrit1 »

I have been using a custom Microsquirt Module based box loaded with some lightly customized MS2/Extra code from the box builder on a supercharged Aprilia motorcycle. All has worked fine for a long time, but there were a few features that stopped working, so I figured I would reload the firmware and the tune, using built-in TunerStudio 'Update/Install Firmware' utlity. Note that firmware was originally loaded via DOS batch file.

One concern I had was that TS never asked whether I have a MS2 or Microsquirt, as does the batch file. AND there was a warning message that stated "TunerStudio can not validate that the selected firmware File is for your Megasquirt. Are you sure you want to load the selected firmware? I selected a file named ''ms2_extra_us.s19' and chose 'Yes'.

The firmware reload using TunerStudio seemed to work fine, including loading project tune settings. However, upon completion, I could not longer communicate with the ecu (TS cycled between connected and not connected every few seconds).

So I thought 'I'll try reloading again.' Now I get 2 errors when using the 'Update/Install Firmware' utility:
1) 'Successfully connected to your MegaSquirt, but no firmware is loaded or the bootload jumper is on. This must be connected before connecting'. Note: I did not set the jumper before starting.
2) 'Could not complete due to the following errors: Failed to retrieve calibration data'

If by calibration data it mean things like calibrate throttle position sensor and calibrate thermistor tables, those values are there.

So now I am stuck on what to do. I get basically the same error when trying to reload using the DOS batch file.

Should I connect the boot jumper and try to reload again? Should I use DOS or TunerStudio? At least the DOS batch asks what kind of board I have.

Help appreciated.

That must be an old firmware version. The filenames are different now, that's likely why TunerStudio is warning you.

I see a 303 in the one picture. If that is implying that firmware is based on old 3.03 firmware, TS's firmware loader does not support it as it is on the old protocol.

Use the command line loader for that.

OK, I got the 3.0.3v customized firmware reloaded, but a bunch of stuff was not working as expected. When loading the 3.0.3v firmware, I have to make a choice whether it is a MSII or Microsquirt. My box has a Microsquirt Module, and seems like it prefers the MSII firmware. Is that expected?

As far as the stuff not working, in particular the test mode ignition did not work. And that has always worked. So I thought I would just try a more current firmware revision to identify if the problem was with the firmware files I had.

I retrieved and loaded 3.4.2 firmware, and opened a new TunerStudio project. Most of the stuff worked, but still not the test mode ignition. So figured there was must be something required in the 3.0.3v custom firmware needed. I tried to reload the 3.0.3v firmware, and now it fails/won't load.

Is there some specific action I need to revert back to an earlier version of firmware?

To go back to the old firmware you will need to short bootload wire.

Don't load the MS2 code on a Microsquirt module. The ignition will never work that way (as well as other things).
