'Finger Painting' in Spark advance/VE maps

For discussion of Phil Tobin's Tuner Studio software (Only about the tuning software itself, not about how to tune or firmware features)

'Finger Painting' in Spark advance/VE maps

Post by BigBlockMopar »

I think it would be a great addition to see a function in TunerStudio that makes it possible (for those using a touchscreen device mainly, but it would still be very useful with mouse-input too) to use a finger or stylus pen (mouse) to increase/decrease fields in a IGN or VE map with a quick and simple stroke, or multiple strokes.
Anyone who knows Photoshop ('Dodge' & 'Burn' tools) might know what I would mean by this.

Example of how the tool could work;
- Select tool-mode to either Increase (Burn/'Darken') or Decrease (Dodge/'Lighten');
- Enter amount to add/substract per movement across a map's field (Maybe default value is 0.5ms for IGN table for instance);
- Enter range of adjacent fields that are affected, to a certain percentage ('Feather'-range). Example, when a 'touched' field value changes "1.0", its adjacent fields will be altered say "0.25" accordingly, any % the user enters. (Altering the adjacent fields will keep the map relatively smooth.)
- Then move/wipe across the fields that you want to alter left/right, up/down, or ofcourse diagonally, or in circular motion if you want to alter a small region.

With the risc of maybe being the only one seeing a need for this, but I think a function like this would make it a lot easier/faster to create complex (3D) maps with multiple peaks and lows.

A smudge paint brush on the table.
Interesting concept.

Couldn't this be another way for newbies to mess up though? One "stroke" and the numbers change by accident?

Having wrenched on cars and built a number of engines during the last 20 years, I'm still a newbie with digital tuning. But when I was trying to find some sweet spots in the ignition map last weekend, it struck me I couldn't select a 'free shape/form' area to alter the values in together. Could only do rows, columns or square blocks at a time, while an engine accelerating would go through the cells in mostly a diagonal line.

Using Photoshop on a daily basis I imagined how easy it would be if one could just point/stroke/make circular motion over a cell and change its value by a certain amount (and its surrounding cells to a lesser degree).

The 'Finger Paint'-option would still be needed to selected and switched ON first.
A better, maybe bit more serious name would perhaps be the 'Finger-Tune' option...

Looking at the complex ignition maps posted above, which were made with extensive dyno-testing ofcourse, it made me wonder how you would enter those in Tunerstudio with the current tools available.
