Electric Assist Steering

Post by Raymond_B »

Now that the OEMs are using electrically assisted steering more and more aftermarket kits and DIY setups are popping up. My 2nd Megasquirt project (assuming I finish the 1st) will be a 1966 Mustang. I want to add elec. assist steering and was thinking to myself if the Megasquirt could be used to help the variable assist. So as vehicle speed increases assist lessens. Some of the kits have a simple potentiometer (for example http://www.usautoperformance.com/epas/), but an output from MS would work as well correct?

Other things that come to mind:

* Street or track setting (or girlfriend-wife setting)
* Wot power cut to the motor to lessen load on alt (assuming straight line racing)

What other integration could you guys think of?

Im doing it using a Toyota EPS that uses canbus to communicate.
MS3 cant output properly formed canbus packets though, so ive had to make a blackbox that goes on the canbus to translate the MS3's speed signal packets into packets for the EPS.

It works well :)

That's awesome, do you think the MS issue is code or something else?

MS3's firmware just doesnt have the ability to form the packets the Toyota EPS needs.

It could be added quite easily, but its taken me 50+ hours and a decent amount of $$s to work out the canbus packet requirements.
Im not quite willing to give that info up yet.

Opel Corsa C has electric power steer and uses a module mounted to the steering column that needs only speed and tach inputs to determine assistance.

it uses rpm signal for know when the engine is powered off (so shut off the assistance) and the vss for know when reduce the assist. If i not remember wrong at near 300hz of vss it do the "last step" reducing power.
