Another PCB Question

Post by Raymond_B »

Hopefully the answer is not, "if you don't know this stop making PCBs" :)

I am making a simple EEC-IV to engine/trans controller adapter. I was working on one that would use the non-cased Microsquirt, but I also wanted to make a simple pass through. So this board connects the EEC-IV plug to two DB-25 connectors. One for engine and one for trans, pic below. Anyway I was thinking about the trace widths for the PCB, but I do not know any of the Ford EEC specs. Default trace width is 10mil and power/ground are 75. Am I over thinking this or should those widths be good?

Here it is test fitted in an EEC case.

Those traces look very small - generally make them as large as reasonable unless you have a good reason otherwise or they are very low current.
By "non cased Microsquirt" do you mean the "Microsquirt module" ?

I'll make them larger James, thank you. Yes, Microsquirt module, I believe it's the v2.2 board here http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/micr ... p-381.html

+1 to James' comments. Logic traces are generally down in the .010" range; don't make them smaller unless you need to, as you can run into damaged traces from the manufacturing process. There's a reason the board companies charge extra for teeny traces. Power traces are as big as you've got room for; I like planes and polygons where possible, even (or is that especially!) with 2-layer boards.

Everything except 12v and ground are 10 mil, 12v and ground are 75 mil. I'll change to 20 mil and 75 mil. Does that sound good? I cannot make too large of a trace due to the pin spacing for the EEC-IV connector.

Here is the board with a 25mil default trace. I fibbed earlier the power and ground are 50 mil traces.
