Disregard. When I tried it later in the day it worked fine. Just needed one more reboot I guess.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Hi,
I have installed ms3+msx in s65 engine. I load firmaware alpha10 for vvt vanos.
When I select vvt PID Q3 in msx is very hot. What's the problem?
Have second problem: vvt4 not run. If select test, not run solenoid. I test the port with pwm generic and solenoid run, but in vvt test no.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
An MSQ and information on your settings would give us a chance of answering your question. However, that potentially sounds like the same issue that y8s had on his install. You might want to try wiring a 1N4001 across the VVT solenoid with banded end towards 12V.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Do you really need to run the solenoids at 1kHz ? That's a great way to boil the flyback circuit. Your MSQ has only 2 VVTs enabled, so VVT3, VVT4 aren't going to do anything.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
The VVT4 problem is a newly introduced simple bug.
I've fixed it for the next release. Send me your email and I'll send you test code.

Q3 getting hot was exactly the problem I had.jsmcortina wrote:An MSQ and information on your settings would give us a chance of answering your question. Curious if this issue is going to keep popping up as more people start using VVT.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Exhaust vvt is all ok and pid work, but intake I have problem. In gauge the angle is correct in vvt2 and vvt4, but if in timing table I chenge the value the angle not change. It change only if I set value up the max angle setting. I think in bmw the cam exhaust cranck clock, but intake crank clockwise...

Re: VVT ideas and testers
In other test I have problem to intake vvt. If I set "advanced" in more duty means, vvt input is ok, but the table timing not work because the shaft cranking opposite. I have try set "retard" in more duty means, but I have vvt2-vvt4 error... not sinc....
In the exhaust vvt is all ok. No sinc error and the table timing work well.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Can you post your matching MSQ and datalogs for these two settings and I'll have a look.
Have you enabled and do you see the "VVT error" indicators light up ?

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Yes, I see the vvt error indicators light up, and I see the angle gauge crazy. This if I set intake retard, but if set advanced is ok, but same times have not sinc at start up and if sinc is ok the table timing not work.
Now I have only datalog for one setting.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
On the two channels you are having problems with have you tried setting the min/max angles both to zero and see what range of reported angles you get with the altered direction setting?

Yes, I have tried to setting min/max=0 , but when I have altered direction vvt not sync and I don't see the angle cam because the gauge is crazy and I see the vvt error indicators light up....

Re: VVT ideas and testers
VVT error isn't checked for when min/max are set to zero.
The direction should have no impact on the angle detection - only on the output duty.

Re: VVT ideas and testers
Time for another update/progress report on my attempt at (mis)using the very primitive VVT system on a VW 1.8T. I've got the PID dialed in pretty well and I'm staying within a 2 degrees or so of my target. The car definately likes what I'm doing. I don't have power and torque curves but rather plateaus that last 1500 (peak HP) and 3000(peak torque) rpms. Evenually I'll find a spare VVT solenoid/chain tensioner assembly to take apart and play with, then maybe I will be able to hit the target a little closer. This is using the alpha 10a code.
