I'm such a newb, I guess my grasp on how firmware interacts with msq is all whacked out. I played all kinds of combos with the end result a no-start. Flashed in Alpha17 and made a raw tune. I noticed 2jzvvti went from 36-2 to 36-1. Went to crank her over just to take a log and bam, started up like a champ :yeah!:

Edit* VVTi control has been looking great, but maybe this graph from a factory service manual can help if anyone wants to do further refinement- this graph also confirms a log I saw showing for some reason the vvti coil is given 14vdc-

I'm trying to find Toyota OE VVTi literature to confirm if there is some kind of special start-up position for the VVTi cam. With VVTi cam control, the start-up has been a little harder, not sure if its the VVTi mapping, or simply I now need to tweak start-up calibrations to work with the new VVTi cam position (over what OE was doing during cranking), I need to work on my hot start for sure. And got to test a low battery start-up, wow. Very impressed with the hardware and the contributor's code, was very surprised the car turned-over and ran with such weak cranking. :D

Gross Poluter, I'll be in your neck of the woods for about two months, would be cool to meet up, and if you want you can analyze my OE ECU's VVTi settings if you like, could possibly answer some of your pondering as to how the OEs tune it and why (though I think it would be confusing at times as they were tuning for different goals at different loads) . Can't wait to see what you find with the knock module. Oh, and is your setup prone to backfiring? I have a few backfires when I let off (hard to hear, I have two metal cats, resonator and muffler) and a buddy of mine (another 2jz VVTi) was having a lot of backfiring when letting off of the throttle (strait through exhaust, what a show).

Mine starts in the "parked" position, full retard. Starts runs and idles like stock. Just driving it you'd probably never guess my car has MS. No backfiring or anything like that. I'm in Orange County during the week at our shop in Costa Mesa. I'm in SD during the weekends. If you're in either area let me know and we can meet up. You can pm me here or send me an email nick[at]nsfabrication.com

I think that is the MS coding right? Mine starts in what I assume is the full retard position as that is where it is at until the coil is energized. After startup I can see VVT duty go from 0% to around 78% after a few seconds. I suppose I can fix the harder start with fuel, but the difference in start-up tells me the OE ECU employs a different VVT position during startup- or its just a lot of signal noise the way I have the VVT wired up.

With the backfiring, I'm wondering if changing the "angel specifies" away from end of squirt and/or the injector trim setting (from off to on). The tune is dialed in pretty darn good, let autotune do its thing, and then manually made some changes after that. I've been driving it around without ego correction and the a/fs are pretty solid. I'll be in San Diego weekdays and some of the weekends.

That's a normal datalog you posted. Tooth and trigger logs have a .CSV file extension.

2JZ VVTi isn't supported in 1.0.5a - you need to use the current code (1.1.1) for that wheel mode.

There's no point in trying 1.0.5a, it doesn't have the wheel decoder for your engine.

Swap your crank sensor wires +/-
Then post another tooth log and a composite log.
