feature request: bov control

Post by ashford »

i would like to see a feature make it into the code to control a bov, nothing fancy just a means to cut vac source from it when idling/cruising. the engine i have idles at 25 kpa, town cruise @35-40. with the tightest spring available for the bov it is still open at idle and light load cruise. this is bad for 2 reasons.

1 engine breathes underhood temps which can be in excess of 200F
2 ability to draw in unfiltered air/ foreign material. this acutally happened to me about a month after i put the car togeather something small and hard was ingested into the motor, destroyed the head piston and block, cost me almost $4000 to fix.

this should be easy to do just use a boost controler valve like diy sells inline with the bov. then for settings something along the lines- as soon as kpa>x and/or rpm>y open valve then kpa<x wait z time then close valve.

If all you need is on-off control of the boost solenoid based on two conditions, a programmable output might just do the trick.

whats needed is a time delay after conditions are met, to allow turbo to spool down. another option i have thought is a pressure differential sensor and when ducting pressure> atmospheric allow bov to operate.

Sorry, missed the "wait z time" part ...

Be careful with the dP sensor sensor selection, as some of them aren't rated for reverse pressure - P1 always has to be greater than P2. Since your duct pressure varies above and below ATM, this could damage the sensor. You might consider two discrete sensors, duct pressure and ATM, and use a comparator - if v(duct) > v(ATM), go high.

Yet you still want to run a attention seeking, noisy, unneeded vented blow off valve?

You are overcomplicating things.
The easy fix is running a recirculating BOV, or even better, none at all.

It can be dammaging to turbos to not have a bov and even tend to blow off couplers .

put a screen over the bov.

You can use programmable outputs and do as you wish you can set it to open only over or under certain throttle angles

you can route the BOV to the turbo suction , this is how the diverter valve work
